Last night I was thinking about the phrase “Bleeding heart liberal” and how we got here, where having so much empathy for other people that your heart bleeds for them could be an insult. Turns out it was coined in 1938 against a bill that aimed to end lynching:

I brought my 5 year old to a hair salon for her first haircut ever. The stylist, a grandmother named Estella, asked if I wanted to keep the very blonde ends of 3 little curly locks, saying, “This is her baby hair. Should we set this aside for you to keep?” What a lovely human 💕
