Some children in Dilley were so distraught they cut themselves or talked about suicide, parents told ProPublica.
They said kids lost their appetites after finding worms and mold on their food, had trouble sleeping, and were constantly sick.

Never a bad time to enjoy Bisa Butlerβs work, but I especially need her joy right now as we start Black History Month.

There seems to be a fundamental misconception about journalists and the First Amendment. You don't get 1A rights in exchange for being accurate and impartial. The ideal of journalistic neutrality was inconceivable to the founders. Journalism in the 1780s was partisan! And they still protected it!
When racists killed Mickey Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman in 1964, they burned their station wagon but left it just off a road where it was easily found.
When racists killed Viola Liuzzo, they advertised her shot-up car for sale, promoting it as a possible tourist attraction.

I am thrilled to learn that 15 of 17 Philadelphia Council Members are supporting this package of legislation to protect our neighbors from ICEβs worst tactics. Be sure to thank them, especially @ruephilacouncil.bsky.social and CM Kendra Brooks for taking the lead.

Philly, Council will be considering a fantastic package of ICE Out bills tomorrow. Today is a great day to call your councilmember, all the at-large councilmembers, and the mayor to urge their support. Tomorrow, pack council chambers to show your support!
NYT: Trump is Briefed on Options for Striking Iran: The president has said he will be βhitting them very hardβ if Iranian leaders kill protesters amid demonstrations.
They report this without any irony or even noting that Trump just killed a protester.
"I'm so sorry that we could not have done this earlier...to have saved the loved ones in your life. But I thank you fopr the work that you have done...to ensure that this pain not be felt by others who call this same city home." β Mayor Mamdani at McGuinness Blvd. presser youtube.com/shorts/uwAYI...
For my Philadelphia-area friends: Monday 10am at the Kimmel Center is the *free* Inauguration ceremony for @dalarrykrasner.bsky.social (his 3rd term), city controller Christy Brady (first *full* term), and a lot of good judges who have been elected or retained.
These civic events are fun. Come!
Candid answer - as someone who handled constituent affairs calls for years - while theyβre not checking the phone right now, the urgency of the moment is important.
Show them you care enough to make the weekend call, and be counted that way. Staffers will clock and report this upstream.
"Academics literally cannot make genAI go away" we also can't make underage drinking go away and we're not advocating for installing bar carts in every classroom.
No one says to legit business owners, "hey I see there's an underground market selling toxic knock-offs of your product: how will you incorporate the toxic product AND protect your customers against its harms?" But apparently it's fine to make this suggestion to educators with respect to AI.
Your mission today:
1. Watch It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and identify any possible subversive elements.
2. Listen to the latest Unsung History with @gvaughnjoy.bsky.social to hear how the FBI(!) did just that, using a framework from Ayn Rand(!).

I have had three young men come shake my hand and thank me at the end of the last day of class. I like this gesture very much.

I wrote about fascism, surrealism, organizing, & how art + activism can work hand in hand to make real political change. Thank you @fubarpac.bsky.social for allowing me to contribute!
you are correct. and everyone should know it.

My response to @miriamposner.com wondering if it is cruel to require students to use @zotero.org No, it is not. These are the assignments I use to get them started.
Students who did NOT have me for research methods are generally upset they did not learn to use Zotero until their senior year. Some have perfected using it with Google docs (I have not) and they teach one another.
Ideally I have some of these students in the capstone semester (busy grading their drafts now) so they have lots of their sources already saved and annotated in @zotero.org and are way ahead of the game. They are required to use it for capstone research as well.
Hereβs a folder with the key assignments I use to get my students using Zotero. Along with this, they produce an annotated bibliography for a research prospectus and have to put all the annotations in Zotero. I introduce the platform in an in class workshop. drive.google.com/drive/folder...
thank you! So glad youβve enjoyed them!
Here's my little book on how pop business books shaped Trump's life writing. Lots of weird close readings of things like Lee Iacocca's autobiography and books about Japanese management techniques.
