iโm reading a book where the character recently looked up homosexuality in an encyclopaedia in a classic charmingly naive moment but throughout the book sheโs also having increasingly graphic flashbacks to passionate lesbian sex. the juxtaposition is delightful
the characters donโt know they are queer; the audience possibly knew before they bought the book. and the audience doesnโt need to have queerness explained to them but they are there to re-experience the joy of discovery at second hand
obviously thereโs the other problem of terminology not being the same but thatโs not what i mean here. itโs the play on audience expectations when youโre writing for a queer audience who know whatโs coming but have deliberately chosen to experience that progression with you
itโs always interesting to see how historical queer novels approach the problem of characters not yet knowing how to name concepts that are nonetheless familiar to the audience (which is sometimes a delicious dramatic irony)
