Saying things like "this [x] sounds like Graceland" or "this [x] was inspired by Graceland"
when they really mean "township jive"
they rarely, if ever, say those things about the zydeco, country, folk, or other genres on it
it's kind of like saying sushi is californian because of california rolls
Also on this: It's why there's no Graceland 2. It combined the talents of many South African musicians, and many genres, which did not overlap again. And of course, Paul Simon. It's why listening to just township jive does not scratch the exact same itch, it does not have Paul, Bakithi, Isaac, Ray.
Graceland mixed a ton of genres (township jive, zydeco, country, etc.), but when someone says something has a Graceland quality, I almost exclusively see it referring to township jive. Or alternatively to a specific instrument, like the bass (Bakithi Kumalo) or drums (Isaac Mtshali).
It's important to note, because a lot of other people (including musicians) will say something "sounds like Graceland", when they really mean it sounds like township jive (unless they're referring to the lyrics, which applies to most Paul Simon).
A lot of people say things have a "Graceland" quality to it, and I want to break it down a bit.
I'm listening to the Boyoyo Boys right now, and I'm hearing what most people would call "Graceland".
