Published today: our new paper showing a 44-year trend of increasing global wildfire disasters (fatalities and economic losses) due to climate change-induced extreme weather. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
In case you need something else to worry about, scientists provide evidence that +1.5βΒ°C of warming is already too high and is likely to generate several metres of sea-level rise over the coming centuries, causing extensive damage to coastal populations: www.nature.com/articles/s43...
Our children will face unprecedented exposure to weather extremes.
Our paper led by Luke Grant and @wimthiery.bsky.social published in @nature.com shows that the generation of our children and grandchildren will be exposed to a lot more weather extremes than ours.

Image with text: "Funding for the Regional Climate Center program lapsed on April 17, 2025 due to a suspension of federal funding from NOAA through the Department of Commerce. It is unknown if or when funding will resume. All data and services offered under the HPRCC contract, including this website, are unavailable."
You may see messages like this on parts of our website, including the drought page. We rely heavily on maps & data from the High Plains Regional Climate Center, which no longer has funding. We'll do our best to point to alternative data sources, but many of these products are not easy to replicate.
A lovely story with pictures of cute animals from @catrineinhorn.bsky.social.
Important to remember that this admin's climate policy rollbacks and rhetoric are wildly inconsistent with public opinion. See your state/community here: climatecommunication.yale.edu/visualizatio...
@yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social released 2024 Climate Opinion Maps:
π‘οΈ 72% of Americans believe global warming is happening.
βοΈ Majorities in all 50 states think global warming is affecting weather in the U.S.
π‘ Majorities in 47 states support a transition from fossil fuels to 100% clean energy by 2050.
That this isn't surprising makes it no less infuriating and disappointing. Thank you to the many experts who put their time and energy into this much-needed effort.
"Itβs our failure of editorial foresight and imagination to have seen the obvious...only at the last minute. To not have, earlier in our assigning process, decided to interrogate the fraught and fractured gender dynamics of wealth accumulation, of corporate influence, of power."

π¨ BIG NEWS - *US National Adaptation Strategy* released and transmitted to UNFCCC. That's right - the US has a National Adaptation Plan!

Graph showing a clear correlation between temperatures and burning areas.
"[N]early all the observed increase in burned areas over the past half-century is due to human-caused climate change. [F]rom 1971 to 2021, human-caused climate change contributed to a +172% increase in burned areas, with a +320% increase from 1996 to 2021."

Really glad to see a hybrid option offered for the next Adaptation Futures. It seems like options for participating in conferences remotely dropped off the map after the early years of the pandemic, but it's *so* important for promoting inclusion and reducing emissions.
Congrats to former lab member Lindsey Sloat and @worldresources.bsky.social's Global Pasture Watch team on the release of this new global grassland time series dataset! landcarbonlab.org/insights/fir...
GRACE mission is finding less water in/on lands, which parallels expectations that warmer atmosphere (a) is more evaporatively βdemandingβ, drying surfaces more, & (b) yields more intense Precip which runs off quicker, replenishing surfaces & subsrfaces less. 1/2
