In the first week after the order was signed, some hospitals across the country — in Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington, Colorado, and Virginia at least — abruptly halted medical care for transgender people under age 19, canceling appointments and turning away patients, including some who had been receiving this care for most of their life. Very few surgeons do any kind of gender affirming surgeries to minors. The only ones that do either:
Do it at the parents request at birth, to forcibly assign an intersex child a binary sex.
Do it in the case of a physical risk to health, like a breast reduction to prevent chronic back pain.
