My method for using layer modes is I guess which one sounds like what I want, do a couple strokes, if it looks wrong I just scroll through literally all modes until something better shows up.
Half of the time it's the same layer mode I started with

It really helps your compositional muscles when you need to plan illustrations that are meant to be cropped vertically like that, lol.
