The stories hidden in maps

Paper maps are great (though they have limitations, which we’ll look at later). Of course, most maps are actually digital these days, and for valid reasons.

What stories?

When a map has any way – be that shading, or contour lines – of telling you about the undulating landscape, even if that map has nothing else on it, it’s of use. You see, the moment you can see where the hills, or mountains are, you can also see where the valleys are.

When you can see where the valleys are, you can see where the water flows. That, in turn, means you can see where the streams and rivers will be. Once you know that, you know where people will be. In fact, a large number of settlements form where two rivers flow into one.

That’s just one example of the stories hidden in maps, but there are many more.

Contour lines made easy

Have you ever played Minecraft, or seen anyone play the game? If not, have a look at the video below:

You will see that in Minecraft, the world is made from blocks. Those blocks are stacked in different layers, to create an undulating terrain. If you were to trace lines along the edges of all the blocks on each layer, effectively, you’ll end up with contour lines.

An interactive map

Contour lines are imaginary lines that show how high above sea level any place on a map is. If you followed this link, a new browser tab will open, showing an Open Street Map topographical (or contour) map, centred on the Erme valley.

Within that map, you will see the contour lines, as jiggly lines. The darker contour lines are major height markers – in this case, 400 metres above sea level. The lighter contour lines mark 10 metre elevation intervals. If you walked along a contour line, your route will be neither uphill, nor downhill.

The closer contour lines are to each other, the steeper the incline is. Think about that: if moving from one contour line to the next gains you 10 metres elevation, what determines the gradient is the distance between the two contour lines. If the distance was 200 metres between them, it means you’d gain 10 metres elevation for 200 metres travel. That’s quite a mild gradient. If, however, the distance between the contour lines were just 10 metres, the gradient would be 45 degrees, which is steep.

Why do contours matter?

At the most basic, contour lines tell us where is high ground, and where is low ground. As you’ve seen, they also tell us the gradient, which is far more important than you might think. For starters, rivers flow slowly and serenely over flat landscapes, but they turn into white-water torrents, down steep gradients.

Most villages, towns and cities have been in the same location for a very long time. That location, in the vast majority of cases, was determined by the availability of water. Water if life, and in medieval (or earlier) times, people used to get their water from rivers. Contours determine where the rivers flow, and they also determine where the river might be narrow enough to bridge.

As a result, contour lines influence travel options, and therefore roads. The French discovered this a very long time ago, and so many of their mountain passes are reached by roads carefully constructed to have a steady 6% or 7% incline. Most roads tend to follow very old routes, and those routes were influenced by the ability to bridge rivers. It’s only quite recent, in humanity’s existence, that we developed the ability to build large bridges, to span huge gaps.

Types of maps

Earlier, I said that paper maps – no matter how much I love them – have limitations. That starts with the scale of the map, which is fixed. A map scale determines how much detail a map can show – for cross-country hiking, you want a 1:25 000 scale map.

Aside from the obvious – the fixed scale – paper maps have other limitations. Digital maps carry metadata – extra information that isn’t immediately visible, but is relevant. For example, when you go plot a cycling, or hiking route on the very best website for that, RideWithGPS.com, the train will be solid, when on a tarred road, but turn to a dotted line, when unsurfaced.

There are many more examples of metadata, including the heatmap on RideWithGPS, which instantly shows how popular a particular stretch of route is. If it isn’t popular (especially for cycling on the road) then it’s likely that most cyclists think of that stretch of road as too dangerous. Other examples of metadata include the oodles of additional information I embed in the digital GoCycle multi-day cycle touring route guides I create.

What does this matter to me?

If you go exploring (and you really should!) either on foot, or by bicycle, understanding the stories maps tell will help you understand the landscape better. It will help you avoid enormous hills (should you want to) or tackle enormous hills (if that’s what you’re after).

Being able to read the stories hidden in maps will enable you to plan far better adventures, too.

Share this:

Click to share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)

Click to share on X (Opens in new window)

Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)

Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)

<a class="share-email sd-button share-icon no-text" data-email-share-error-text="If you're having problems sharing via email, you might not have email set up for your browser. I need to get a few Raspberry Pi's: 1 (Pi Zero?) to use as a PiHole, one (Pi 4?) to set up my own instance of Mastodon (which would be used only by me) and I also want to build a magic mirror.

The great thing about 2029 in the UK, is that "there's nowhere to go" is a completely empty statement and Labour will be completely destroyed. The key is to make Green, Independents & other parties the biggest beneficiaries where possible.

Book review – Eat, Sleep, Cycle, by Anna Hughes

If you looked at an accurate world map, or better yet, a globe, you’ll say that the UK isn’t big at all. In fact, especially when compared to a continent like Africa, you could say the UK is tiny. And you’d be correct.

Until you decided to cycle the coastline of the UK. If you did that, you’d rapidly discover the UK is far from tiny, and cycling the coastline is a rather long way.

That’s what Anna Hughes did, and this book tells the story of her journey. Hughes worked for the active transport charity, Sustrans, prior to taking on this journey, and she did a call-out to Sustrans people all over the UK, asking for accommodation along the way.

This was quite a clever move, as it meant that, Hughes had access to a proper bed, and a real bathroom..

The plan was really simple: follow the Thames from London to the sea, turn left, and follow the coastline until she was back at the Thames. That’s a 4 000 miles ride, with an enormous amount of climbing along the way.

The book gives us an honest insight into the journey, both the high points, as well as the low points. It is as much a journey around the coast of Great Britain as a mental journey, with the human element being core to the story.

Equally, Hughes is clearly in love with the landscape through which she cycles, and shares that with you. This means that anyone who reads this book will get wanderlust, even if they aren’t cyclists. It’s the story of a great adventure, and is brilliantly told by Hughes. I have no doubt that you will enjoy reading this book.

Please note: If you order directly from her web site, you can get a signed copy.

You can also follow the author on Bluesky.

If you're still active on Twitter, you're siding with and supporting a Nazi.
WTF would you choose to do that?

My colours

This post is NOT about cycling, but it underpins EVERYTHING on WillCycle.

Sometimes the right thing to do is to be diplomatic. Sometimes, the right thing to do is to look the other way. Right now is NOT one of those times. Right now, it’s time for me to nail my colours to the mast.

You

I couldn’t care less if you’re black, pink, yellow, brown, white, red, nor indeed bright green with purple stripes. (Actually, I’d be delighted if you were bright green with purple stripes, but let’s not digress!) I also don’t care what you look like – short or tall, fat or small, and anywhere in between. I don’t care who you pray to (or if you don’t pray) nor do I care where you came from. Or where your ancestors came from!

I couldn’t care less who you love, nor how you love. It really doesn’t matter to me with what accent you speak (though I will confess to being a big fan of Scottish and Irish accents). It makes no difference to me what your sex, or gender is.

Me

I care passionately about some things though. That begins with my core belief that ALL people are equal. Alongside that, I rather strongly believe that we should do no harm. Obviously, you’re free to live your life in the manner that you see fit, provided your choices don’t harm others.

I very strongly believe in having enough, and not to keep trying to get more. I believe in helping others, without expecting anything in return. And I passionately believe that we must fight to save this planet. After all, it’s the only one we have.

This is why I deleted my Twitter account ages ago, and why I’m current shutting down my Instagram account. After all, I cannot claim to care for the planet, while supporting the evil billionaires who ruthlessly exploit it.

Together

It’s not for me to tell you how to live your life. However, it is very much for me to decide how to respond to how you choose to live your life. If you’re going to start with hatred and bile, you can sod right off. I don’t want hate-filled people in my life, and I don’t want them on this site.

In my world, the sun is shining. In my world, most people are inherently good (though obviously, there are exceptions, but we’ll not trump on about those). You’re welcome to share my world, but that is absolutely reliant on you choosing to not harm others. In my world, there’s no room for hatred.

If you’ve never done so, please go read the Paradox of Tolerance, by Karl Popper. Then stand up to the hateful minority. Do not both-sides good people standing up to evil. Do not platform evil. In fact, unless you have no other choice, do not interact with evil. It thrives on your interactions and outrage, so starve it of the attention it craves.

Make a difference

Good news doesn’t sell newspapers, so you’ll rarely get to hear any. It is for this reason that each edition of my newsletter, The Spirit Of Adventure, contains at least one good news story. Try and spread good news all the time.

Remember, the hateful ones are the minority. They shout loudly, to make themselves seem bigger, is all. Do not fall for their lies. Do not go hate immigrants, disabled people, unemployed people, trans people, or gay people, as that’s what the hateful ones want you to do. Don’t allow yourself to become a useful idiot.

Try and do at least one random act of kindness per day. That could be as simple as holding open a door for someone. Oh, and DON’T go telling others about your acts of kindness. After all, you’re doing it purely to be kind, and not to make yourself look good! Telling anyone about it invalidates your random act of kindness.

Plant trees. Plant flowers. If you can, plant veggies. Especially plant veggies on uncared-for strips of council-owned land, and expect others to help themselves. Then encourage others to do even more of that.

At a coffee shop, if you can, pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the queue, without them knowing. Oh, and avoid chains! Support small, independent businesses instead. Their profits pay for the ballet lessons of their daughter, which means the ballet teacher can afford to pay the local builder to do some renovations, who in turn can dine at that local restaurant, and so on. When you buy from a chain, all the profits are siphoned off to some already rich and greedy shareholders.

Live

Live your life. Really live. When was the last time you did anything for the first time? And why was it so long ago? Go change that!

Whenever you can, skip the car, and cycle or walk instead (I’m aware it isn’t always possible). And when walking or cycling, stop when you see a flower, then go smell it. Just don’t pick it – leave it so others can also enjoy it.

Pay attention to sounds. Really – stop and listen, perhaps with your eyes closed. You live this ONE life, so squeeze every single drop of experience from it.

Go

The purpose of life is to leave this world at least a tiny bit better than how you found it. Go and do ALL the crazy things. Say yes to more. Wear the bright colours. Love, with all your heart, even when that risks breaking your heart.

It’s a beautiful world. Go live in it. .

Bikes On Trains – UK 2025

Can I take bikes on trains in the UK?

The short answer is simple: yes, you can take your bikes on trains in the UK. As ever the devil is in the detail. Most intercity trains will take a maximum of three non-folding, full-sized bicycles. Almost all trains will refuse to carry tandems, and all train services will refuse trikes.

I’m a big fan of combining cycling and train travel, especially on an adventure like cycling the Kennet and Avon Canal. The trouble is that in the UK, train operators are privatised, and service provision is fragmented, at best. Some companies allow bicycles (meaning full-sized, non-folding bikes, in this context) on all services, some allow them only on certain services, and some don’t allow them at all.

Bizarrely, it is possible to get a bicycle reservation on a train service that doesn’t permit bicycles! What this means in practice is that you have to be switched on when planning on taking your bicycle on a train.

I’ve gone through every single train operator in the UK, listing their bicycle provision and restrictions further below. Bicycle reservations are required on most trains, but are free of charge. For more information, including details for individual stations, visit the National Rail PlusBike page.

UPDATE: If you were looking for info on taking your bike on a train in France, then The realities of taking your bike on a train in the UK

It can seem daunting to take your bicycle on a train, but in practice it isn’t all that bad. To be honest, it really isn’t a brilliant experience, but broadly speaking most people should be able to cope with it.

The trouble comes in on most newer high speed trains, where bicycles go inside a cupboard, and are left hanging from the front wheel. The Cross Country trains have cupboards that at first seem cramped, until you see the minute cupboards used on the new Hitachi trains, run by the likes of GWR.

My bike has 700c x 38 tyres on, and I don’t consider myself to be physically weak, but I struggle to get my bike into that cupboard. Once your bike is safely stowed away, do yourself the enormous favour of locking it. Train operators all say you’re not allowed to lock the bike to the train, but I usually do so. In a worst-case scenario, I’d lock my bike’s frame and front wheel together.

Though I’m not aware of a bike being stolen off a train, if you don’t lock your bike, by the time you see someone wheeling it along the platform, your train will be departing, and it will be too late to do anything about it.

What to look out for when you take your bicycle on a train

Always check for engineering works on the line, as that all too often means rail-replacement buses being laid on. Usually, those won’t take bicycles, but I’ve had such a bus driver take me and my bicycle before, so it’s a case of pot luck.

Bicycle reservations for trains

Usually, on slower, local or regional trains, bicycle reservations are often not possible. An example is the newly-reopened Dartmoor Line, from Exeter to Okehampton and useful for getting you and your bike to the Granite Way. In my experience, when such services aren’t busy, train staff will often allow more bikes on.

In fact, on the GWR Tarka Line, up to Barnstaple, to the start of the Tarka Trail, we once had 12 full-sized bicycles loaded! When reasonably possible, I prefer to take these trains. Typically, cycle reservations aren’t possible on these trains, so you do run the risk of not being able to get on a particular train, but in reality I’ve very rarely suffered from that.

The smaller, regional trains tend to have dedicated bicycle storage, with your bike being stored upright, on both wheels. Some carriages only take 2 bikes, but most tend to take at least 4. These trains are more likely to have level access, so rolling your bike onto, or off the train is a simple affair.

To board, look for the (small) bicycle sign next to a set of doors, then once on board, to your immediate left, or right (depending which way the train is round) there will be an area with fold-down seats, where bicycles go when the seats are folded up. You will find it useful to take a bungee strap, to help secure your bike.

Saving money

Train fares aren’t cheap, sadly. However, there are ways you can save money. For starters, have a look at what rail cards are available. For example, a Devon And Cornwall Railcard costs £12 per year, but automatically gives you a third off the price of trains throughout the two counties (off-peak services only). There are a number of other railcards available. More importantly, there is ticket-splitting.

With rail fare prices being so high, splitting your ticket can save you a lot of money. For example, currently, an off-peak return ticket from Plymouth to Bristol Temple Meads is £64.70 per person, without any railcards. By splitting the tickets, you can make that same journey, on the same train, for £40.65, saving you £24!

How does it work? Well, in this example, you actually book two return tickets – one from Plymouth to Taunton, and the other from Taunton to Bristol. You will end up on the same train, in the same seat, while paying less. It can get a bit complex, but fortunately there’s the Ticket Splitting web site to do the heavy lifting for you.

Just a word of advice: you can book your tickets through that site, but you’ll struggle to make bike reservations through it. I tend to call in person at the local train station, and tell them I want my tickets splitting. Station staff have always been helpful when I did so, and over the years it’s saved me quite a bundle.

Trainline – best avoided

There’s a very handy website called Trainline. Regardless how useful it might be, I suggest that you don’t book tickets through them. The reason is simple: if the train was cancelled, and you wanted a refund, Trainline will charge you £9 for that refund. Yes, even though it’s not your fault. Furthermore, the amount of refund you get might be a pittance, as this instance clearly shows: a £3.90 final refund, from a ticket that cost £85.90!

A far better option is to walk into a ticket office, and buy a ticket in person. When speaking to the ticket office staff member, ask them to split your ticket, to save you money. Some stations don’t have ticket offices, or sometimes you can’t get to a ticket office in time. In those cases, use TrainPal. They also do bus tickets for some services.

When you get to the station

Try to allow yourself enough time to get to the correct platform. Remember, depending on the station, you may have to use lifts, or in some cases haul your bike up and down several flights of stairs.

Once on the platform, look at the digital information signs – often they will tell you which carriage the bike spaces are in. On most stations, there are markings on the platform, so you can see in advance where that carriage will be when the train stops. This can help you avoid having to rush along a potentially crowded platform with your bike.

When your train pulls in, don’t crowd the doors! Allow people on the train to disembark first, else there’s simply a traffic-jam that doesn’t help anyone.

When on the train

If you have valuable, small and removeable items, such as rechargeable lights, of a GPS computer, remove it from the bike! As I said above, if I’m going to leave my bike unattended, I always lock it, and I suggest you do the same. Just, whatever else you do, don’t lock your bike to that of a complete stranger.

Once seated, pay attention to announcements over the tannoy. Before you get to the station where you’ll disembark, go and start getting your bike unlocked, and unhooked. The train’s vestibule will soon fill with impatient people, all in a hurry to get off, so ensure you do this early enough.

If travelling with panniers, ensure those are clipped back on to the bike. Once off the train, please don’t stop in front of the doors. Instead, move out of the way first. You can take your time re-attaching lights and similar when out of the way on the platform.

Train Operators

Avanti West Coast

They accept bikes on all Avanti West Coast trains, which tend to run between London Euston and Glasgow or Edinburgh, as well as links to Birmingham New Street, Bangor and Blackpool. Their network map is here and their bicycle policy is here. Go have a look at their bicycle policy. Their network map is here.

Southern Railway

Be very careful with this operator: they don’t allow bicycles on peak-time trains, and no reservations are possible. They explicitly state they may prevent you from boarding with your bike if the train is busy, and the way they deal with demand, when cycle events happen in the area they serve is to simply impose a blanket ban on full-sized bicycles on their trains during such days. Their bicycle policy is here, and their network map is here.

Transpenine Express

Bike reservations are required, but are easy to make. They want you to make a bike reservation at least 15 minutes before your train departs. Their bicycle policy is here, and their route map is here.

Transport for Wales

Bicycle on some services, reservations are required, and must be made at least 24 hours in advance, which is really unhelpful.

UPDATE: If you were looking for info on taking your bike on a train in France, then this site will be a great help!
<div can seem daunting to take your bicycle on a train, but in practice it isn’t all that bad.

Turns out http://www.WillCycle.com receives more visitors from Israel than I realised. They're all getting redirected to https://palestinecampaign.org.
I also put control around who can access the backend. Surprisingly, most admin login attempts are from the USA

If your Christianity causes you to be offended by someone asking the most powerful person in the country to be merciful toward the powerless, then you have deeply, deeply misunderstood the teachings of Jesus Christ.

I've spent the afternoon down memory lane compliling a blog post about my first trip onto foreign soil when I spent a couple of weeks cycling through France on my own with limited French in 1972.
It's a long, text heavy read, but you may find it interesting (or you may not!)

It's at […]

I have nothing against Americans overall. Sure, their education system is pathetically ineffective, and is churning out millions of semi-literate people, who are easily exploited by rampant populism peddled by right-wing idiots, and that's only to keep getting worse now.
But I do have sympathy […]

Anyone who goes through my post history, knows I work for Meta (Facebook).

I am "Consumer Content Administrative Manager". My primary duties include content appeals, account appeals, account reviews, and some peer review.

It is no surprise that my job depends on people using Facebook. Today, I am going to suggest, you not do so. I can make that suggestion because we have a user base of billions, and I know most people would keep using Facebook even if the Devil ran the company. People are strange.

But if you feel you can truly live without Facebook, do so. Internally, things are changing, and not for the better. None. I do not care if you believe you disabled a "feature" or "opt out" of something. You only seem to have done so. Look, the signs were clear that the American Empire would implode.
I just didn't expect it to be happening so soon.

Best remedy after a damn hectic day at work, and you can't go for a bike ride?
Easy: pick up my guitar and play for a while.
Making music is fantastic for the soul, no matter how good, or bad, you may be at it.
In the end, we make music for ourselves, and nobody else.

To argue about whether Musk made a Nazi salute is beyond futile. It is stupid. Don't waste your time.

Instead, if you are still on Twitter, leave now and tell people who know who are still there that you will respect them less if they stay.

If you were planning to buy an EV, don't consider […]

By withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement the U.S. joins Libya, Iran, Yemen, and that's it.

All other countries in the world remain committed to fighting climate change.

So, in case anyone's in any doubt, yes. Yes, you are the baddies now.

Best-value helmet cam

So, you’re looking for a good-quality cycling helmet camera? You want a battery life of around two and a half hours, good video quality (4K), digital image stabilisation, AND WiFi connectivity, right?

The WillCam

OK, I don’t manufacture these, but as I do sell them, I get to name my product. From the outset I will tell you that WillCycle isn’t the only website that sells these exact same cameras – Chilli-Tech sells exactly the same camera. When you do some research, you’ll find my prices are better.

The specs at a glance

4K image quality, at 30fps

Digital image stabilisation for smoother video

2.5 hours of recording on a full charge – longer if using an external power source

You get different mounts in the box – choose between helmet mount, or bar-mounted

Includes external power source longer charge cable, with integrated end-cap

All this for only £88.99 + postage

See for yourself

In the video below, you can see the great image quality. For comparison, there’s a 2nd video, filmed on a Chilli-Tech Mk II camera. Both cameras were mounted to my helmet at the same time, so you can compare like for like.

Night time

Many people asked me what the camera’s performance is like at night. This urban night-time video should clear that up for you. The date on the video’s correct, but the time was an hour out, and the video was taken at just after 6am, well before dawn.

What’s in the box?

Besides the WillCam, you will also receive a USB-C charge cable, a great helmet-mount (with quick-release), a handle-bar mount and a clamp-on mount, so you will have plenty options to mount the camera. The quick-release is at first quite stiff to operate.

That’s not all, though! You will also receive a different, waterproof screw-on end-cap (which covers the memory card slot and charge port) with a long, integrated USB-C charge cable.

This means you can easily extend the WillCam’s already very impressive battery life, simply by plugging it into a power bank! That means you can continue videoing for many more hours (if recording in over-write mode). For clarity, you must stop recording before removing the external power source.

You can control the camera itself via the free app (but you don’t need the free app just to record) and it supports memory cards of up to 256GB. When using the app, with the camera in WiFi recording mode, the video footage will be saved to your phone instead.

Remember, 4K video generates far more data, so I would suggest opting for a genuine Class 10 micro-SD memory card. The camera does not ship with a memory card.

The (not so) small print

The WillCam is not perfect. My only complaint is wind noise. I do not control the manufacturing process, so cannot change this. On my own camera, I stuck a tiny piece of electrical tape over the mic hole.

When using the camera in WiFi mode, the battery life will be further reduced. This is expected, as additional power consumption is needed for the WiFi functionality.

Unlike the Chilli Tech Mk II camera, you can quite easily see whether or not the camera is switched on, or recording, even in bright daylight. Finally, though you can use the camera without the app, setting the date and time is done automatically via the app.

Don’t just take my word for it

Here’s what Gary (Gazza-D on Bluesky) had to say about this camera:

It’s a really good camera. I’ve had a few over the years and it is seriously the best I’ve used.

Get your peace of mind now!

Cycling with a camera acts as a visual deterrent to many bad drivers. For those that still drive in a manner that endangers you, simply report them via Op Snap (see also how to make a better Op Snap report). To purchase your WillCam, simply click the PayPal button below.

Please note, the postage is for UK destinations only – please contact me for international shipping costs. Please allow up to around 3 weeks for delivery, though usually, it’s far quicker. The camera is sent via recorded delivery.
Due to popular demand, I have started selling these cameras again. Sadly, I had to slightly raise the price, though at £88.99 (plus postage), they’re still an absolute bargain!

Get your camera here

Simply click the Buy Now PayPal button below. Because you’re buying through PayPal, you will have automatic buyer protection.

Using the different camera mounts

Your new WillCam ships with multiple different mounts, and this post cast more light on how to use the different mounts.

Resetting the WillCam

Should you ever need to reset the camera, simply follow the steps below:

1. Download the camera firmware through this link
2. Copy the compressed package to a 32GB (or larger) memory card, and unzip it – you will need to use 7-Zip
3. Insert the card into the camera, and long-press the power button to turn it on
4. A flashing green light indicates the camera is being upgraded. Once the green light goes out, the upgrade is complete (do not touch it during the upgrade process)
5. Remove the card and delete the files on the memory card.

18 Castles – an introduction

18 Castles is a multi-day cycle touring route guide, and if old, or ancient buildings are your thing, then you will love this route. Even if you’re not into castles that much, this route showcases some of the best riding Devon has to offer.

Set entirely within Devon, as is usual for my GoCycle routes, it’s a circular route. The route starts, and ends in Plymouth, but you can just as easily start and end in Exeter. At 163 miles, you can ride it over three, or four days, but I have to warn you from the outset that there are some very steep climbs.

So, 18 castles along the route?

Well, yes. But also no! I’m using the word “castle” quite generically here. You see, a castle is (or was) also a residence, usually of some or the other lord, or royalty. However, on this route I also include military forts, which strictly speaking aren’t castles.

In addition, the castles on the route vary from in excellent state of repair, to being in ruins. One castle only has part of one of an original four towers left. Some castles are open to the public, despite being privately owned, some are owned by English Heritage, and some by the National Trust. Some castles are privately owned, and not open to the public.

The castles

Crownhill Fort

Lydford Castle

Okehampton Castle

Castle Drogo

Exeter Castle

Powderham Castle

Bonus hillfort

Compton Castle

Berry Pomeroy Castle

Berry Head

Kingswear Castle

Millbay Fort

Bayard's Cove Fort

Dartmouth Castle

Totnes Castle

Plympton Castle

Plymouth Castle

Royal Citadel

English Heritage

Crownhill Fort

Crownhill Fort is the first stop on the route. The fort is in excellent state of repair, and if you really wanted to, you could stay there overnight. Click here for more details about the fort.

Lydford Castle

The next one is Lydford Castle. The castle is actually an old prison, and even for its time, apparently an exceptionally brutal one. It retained the “castle” name, as the prison was built on the remains of an older castle. The castle is owned by English Heritage. Lydford is at one end of the Granite Way, with Okehampton at the other end.

Okehampton Castle

After Lydford, you’ll ride to Okehampton Castle. Partly in ruins, it is supposedly one of the most haunted places in the UK. Having said that, when I camped overnight, there were no signs of ghosts! English Heritage owns this castle.

Castle Drogo

Castle Drogo is next on the list, and it’s the new kid on the block. Despite it’s very old appearance, construction only started in 1910. The National Trust owns and manages Castle Drogo.
Not officially part of the route, but quite close to Castle Drogo there is Prestonbury Castle, and Wooston Castle. These are the remains of two iron age hillforts, but there’s a brutal hill to get to them.

Exeter Castle

Exeter Castle is next, but with limited access. Today, the castle is a wedding venue, amongst other things, and it’s in good shape.

Powderham Castle

Nearby is Powderham Castle. Seat of the Earl of Devon, the castle grounds are open to the public. The castle is in excellent condition.

Bonus hillfort

Another unofficial bonus is Castle Dyke, also the remains of an iron age hillfort. This one is circular in shape, though all that remains are undulating remains of the earth walls and the surrounding ditch.

Compton Castle

Compton Castle is your next destination. Owned by The National Trust, the castle is in great condition, and is open to the public.

Berry Pomeroy Castle

Berry Pomeroy Castle is the next stop. The castle is in ruins, but the walls are mostly intact. Ironically, the existence of Berry Pomeroy Castle made the nearby Totnes Castle less desirable as a residence.

Berry Head

Berry Head is not a castle, but actually two military forts. You’ll be visiting the Northern Fort, with the Southern Fort nearby, as an extra option. Each fort was capable of functioning independently, and even had it’s own well.

Kingswear Castle

Kingswear Castle compliments the defences of Dartmouth Castle, and despite the name was really a fort. Its owned by the same organisation who owns Crownhill Fort, and it’s available to book as a private holiday residence. It is not open to the public, and cycling along the access lane (a private road) is forbidden.

Millbay Fort

Very close to Kingswear Castle you will find Millbay Fort, which is a substantial ruin. Public access is permitted along the lane leading to it, but cycling is explicitly forbidden. There is no public access to the fort itself, following recent work to stabilise it.

Bayard’s Cove Fort

Across the river Dart, you will visit Bayard’s Cove fort. It’s open to the public, but has no roof. English Heritage owns and manages the fort, with free access.

Dartmouth Castle

Nearby is the 600 year old Dartmouth Castle. Again, despite the name, the castle was a military fortification. With superb estuary views, English Heritage owns the castle, and it is open to the public.

Totnes Castle

Totnes Castle is a traditional Norman motte and bailey castle. English Heritage owns and operates this castle, too. It’s open to the public, and the views from the ramparts, on a clear day, are breath-taking.

Plympton Castle

Plympton Castle is another Normal motte and baily castle, though significantly smaller than Totnes Castle. It dates from the time when the manor of Plymton was an important town, while Plymouth was a simple fishing village.

Plymouth Castle

The remains of Plymouth Castle is the following stop. Once an impressive four-tower structure, all that remains is the outside of one of the towers. If you asked the average Plymothian where Plymouth Castle was, they’re most likely to point you to the Royal Citadel instead!

Royal Citadel

The last stop is the Royal Citadel. This is a large fortress, built originally to the (by then) well-established five-pointed star shape. The fortress was extended, and it remains a functioning military base. Occasionally, limited access tours are permitted, but mostly it is off-limits to the public.

English Heritage

This route visits a significant number of castles managed by English Heritage. At most of those, you will need to pay admission, but English Heritage members gain free entry. As a result, it might be worth your while considering joining English Heritage.
