All that bottom tracking must be helpful for keeping you awake! Good luck with the rest of the surveys.
Wishing you calm seas @alltooclearfilm.bsky.social! In partnership with @harknesslab.bsky.social and @lakeheaduniversity.bsky.social, we will be sinking an autonomous up-looking echosounder that will ping 24/7 to help understand the diel behaviour of fish and zoop at Sup Shoal. Be sure to tune in!

The difference between satellite-based bathymetry (left, Smith & Sandwell, 1997) and ship-acquired multibeam bathymetry of the Southeast Indian Ridge (Loubrieu et al.)
Measuring travel time and knowing the speed of sound in water, the echosounder provides depth measurements along swaths, which we combine to create bathymetric maps, revealing underwater landscapes, submarine volcanoes, and ridges.
A pretty solid read if you want to learn about CRSโs and the difference between a foot and a survey foot.
The future is #catostomidae... firmly believe that if there's a sentinel species that can tell us about enironmental changes, this group of fishes is it. Widely distributed, rarely targeted by anglers (and therefore don't need to worry about fishing mortality), and, I mean, just look at that face

We're back in February for more conservation science! Join Dr. Mark Ridgway for the scoop on Algonquin Park lake fish. There's more going on beneath the waters than we thought!

imaging the axis of the Southwest Indian Ridge with the multibeam sonar
This is why we turned on our multibeam sonar, which measures bathymetry at high resolution (~50 m/pixel) along the track of the ship, revealing spectacular highs and lows as we crossed the Southwest Indian Ridge a couple days ago.
Quote: "This situation shows why it's a bit of a risky proposition โฆ to be relying on the industry to collect data that you're using to assess the fishery and then make decisions about how much quota the industry can take."

Picture of a boat on a lake moving large floating letters that spell "Happy".
Although it was a lot of work to push them into place, I think the trout are quite happy with their new benthic alpha-habitat structures. Unless you think we need funding to replace it with a much trendier font? Maybe a nice Romie or Garamond serif?

Would be fun to try. Altho we developed tags that can be activated, detected and decoded by sonar, the โฌ๏ธ body size, โฌ๏ธ predation pressure, and โฌ๏ธ mortality of Alewife would make reliable detection challenging. But @glatos-fish.bsky.social have trkd Cisco, Mooneye, and Bloater. doi.org/10.1139/cjfa...

Picture showing a very old Toshiba Laptop running software for a vintage Simrad EY500 scientific echosounder. Also see on the wooden boat shelf is an old Kongsberg Mesotech SM2000 multibeam computer and a monitor showing a colourful multibeam swath echogram.
