Good point, but isn't that why an ambitious, young, charismatic politician should champion it?!! The gentrification discourse will be mostly intra-Oak, but known as having a bold plan would be Calif-wide. I had high hopes for Schaaf, and thought she'd use her Oak mayor as a stepping stone, but...
She was definitely a supporter and an advocate, but my sense was she didn't champion it as much as she could or should have. But my bar is high; I was in Milw when Mayor Norquist hired Peter Park as planning director after he ran studios at UW-Milw studying tearing down the Park East Freeway.
According to this report Oakland has the most land value to gain of any US city by removing the freeways within 3 miles of downtown. This is why it is extra disappointing that former Mayor Libby Schaaf did not better champion removing I-980, and no local pol has picked up even that light mantel.

You hear a lot about men being angry, too. You see their anger. That one is historically evergreen. Much of what has happened in the world has been the aftermath of men's anger. And to be clear, men's anger is a very scary thing. It is uncontrollable and entitled. It's a bit too easy to point at January 6 as an example (though that is definitely men's anger), but the most progressive men get angry and become horrible. And depending on the temperature of society, it is because Men Are Angry Right Now, perhaps for the same reasons that men are lonely or for some other grievance.
