Records are made to be broken but, I can't stress this enough, this was not the record. Wilt Chamberlain still holds that by a lot.

Sportswriters complaining that Kobe got knocked down to third sound like MAGA idiots arguing that Riley Gaines really deserves the honor of fourth place. Grow up.

The Bombing of Iran’s Azadi Stadium Is Straight Out of Israel’s Gaza Script Israel has long targeted sport facilities and athletes in Gaza. Now with US help, it’s doing the same thing in Iran.

ESPN isn't covering the bombing of one the most famous stadiums on earth so.... my latest piece @thenation.com "The Razing of Iran’s Azadi Stadium Is Straight Out of Israel’s Gaza Script" www.thenation.com/article/soci...

If only this man could hear all the voices inwardly responding, 'I do have children, and I spend nearly every waking moment thinking about and wishing for this very thing,' the force would knock him right over and deafen him for life

Sorry, I just want to leave this quote here, which entirely encapsulates "planning" in California.

We can't make changes unless are certain how they will play out, so we decide to keep things as they are (pretending that that is not *also* a choice).

Most people also won’t finish your 500-word article. So write at whatever length is appropriate for the subject.

Scroll a little further down. They began in Chicago, but they were mostly located in Madison from 1919 to 2015.

Peter Park taught the first arch / urb planning studio I took studying redeveloping the Beerline B, an old rail corridor along the Milw River. By the time I finished grad school, the Park East had been torn down and the Beerline B had new buildings going up. California's pace is glacial...

Probably not in the medium term. But removing I-980 is easy logistically, trucks going north or east can simply use I-880.

Good point, but isn't that why an ambitious, young, charismatic politician should champion it?!! The gentrification discourse will be mostly intra-Oak, but known as having a bold plan would be Calif-wide. I had high hopes for Schaaf, and thought she'd use her Oak mayor as a stepping stone, but...

She was definitely a supporter and an advocate, but my sense was she didn't champion it as much as she could or should have. But my bar is high; I was in Milw when Mayor Norquist hired Peter Park as planning director after he ran studios at UW-Milw studying tearing down the Park East Freeway.

According to this report Oakland has the most land value to gain of any US city by removing the freeways within 3 miles of downtown. This is why it is extra disappointing that former Mayor Libby Schaaf did not better champion removing I-980, and no local pol has picked up even that light mantel.

You hear a lot about men being angry, too. You see their anger. That one is historically evergreen. Much of what has happened in the world has been the aftermath of men's anger.
And to be clear, men's anger is a very scary thing. It is uncontrollable and entitled. It's a bit too easy to point at January 6 as an example (though that is definitely men's anger), but the most progressive men get angry and become horrible. And depending on the temperature of society, it is because Men Are Angry Right Now, perhaps for the same reasons that men are lonely or for some other grievance.

for this week’s My Time Back, i wrote about Ronan Farrow’s Catch And Kill, but i mostly wrote about anger and what to do with it, how to sort it out when you learn about horrors mytimeback.beehiiv.com/p/catch-and-...

Because more people should know about Sacramento's Two Sheds. "I know my soul is an infinite chain, weather will go while flowers remain, I hold the one who mirrors me best, and the happiest birds make the sturdiest nests...it breaks my heart to be alive." #CountryRockSunday

Maybe once, but the Bay Area is in many ways surprisingly conservative. I used to co-chair the Regional & Urban Design Forum at the AIA East Bay and other than book events with Conor Dougherty or Paul Goldberger, weβ€˜d struggle to get a dozen people to show up at our (pretty good IMHO) events… : /
