I think most doctrines fall victim to this. So, for instance, every now and then there is a survey of Lutherans done in which a high percentage basically say they are saved by being good people. Of course many churches function on a works-righteousness paradigm despite doctrinal statements. So...
There is also the complication of what the doctrine says, what people think it says, what they think they believe despite what it says, and what they probably believe as revealed in what they do. I'm likely missing a couple of points...
