Twenty years ago, Australians protested en masse against our involvement in the US war on Iraq that was justified by lies about Iraq’s possession of “weapons of mass destruction”.
Make no mistake: The AUKUS submarine pact has dragged Australia into Trump and Netanyahu’s illegal war on Iran in all but name.
The Australians were on the submarine as part of the AUKUS security pact. And despite Prime Minister Albanese insisting they had not “participated in any offensive action against Iran”, this distinction matters little when the war itself is wrong – something this government has been unwilling to say
Last week, reports emerged that three Australian crew were aboard a US submarine when it torpedoed an Iranian ship, killing more than 80 people and apparently leaving the survivors to drown.
Australia has an opportunity to get out of AUKUS. We should take it.
We ask the Albanese Government to prioritise Australia's interests and security, and to join the UK and the US Governments in undertaking an independent parliamentary inquiry into AUKUS.
