The lack of leadership in Aotearoa-NZ is staggering. Our foreign minister has MAGA brain rot. No one is preparing the country for what the next 6 months of a full crisis will look like. Not politicians or journalists. The coverage of Amerisraeli aggression has been extremely muted.

3. It is important to remember that there are other ways of managing inflation than keeping a bufferstock of people on the dole. The Govt can take direct action to reduce unemployment. They choose not to. They prefer to keep labour subjugated, atomised... whole communities abandoned. Ghouls. (Ends)

2. I think we can do without incredible insights as 'benefit numbers are high cos job market is grim'. Why is it grim? Cos Govt and RBNZ have worked together to create unemployment. This was the plan; the reckonomists just didn't know how hard it would be to pull out of the dive. They never do.(3/n)

Three things:
1. *At least* Brad talks down the option of cutting benefits. Although with numbers at this level, and the budget artificially fixed, watch it happen anyway. (2/n)

High unemployment driving benefit dependency, but set to improve - economist
The rise was largely driven by a weak labour market, said Infometrics principal economist Brad Olsen said.

"There has been a larger proportional increase in Jobseeker support benefit requirements compared to all other benefits on average," he said.

The government had options to intervene but they were not all politically or socially palatable, Olsen said.

That included clamping down access to benefits.

"Which could well reduce the overall numbers, but would likely leave a number of New Zealanders out in the cold and facing very challenging circumstances at a time when we know that the number of jobs being advertised in the economy are still 25 percent lower than pre-pandemic and the unemployment rate is at a 10-year high."

The majority of reckonomists under 65 were obvs given psychedelics at Uni and brainwashed by hypnotic ideologues.. On the positive side of things, the tech for BEV trains with mega-watt charging at stations is becoming more & more developed, so we wouldn't even necessarily need full lines electrification.

My gut punch moment is that we used to have some really early (short length) electric trains, but they were dismantled for diesel units because they were deemed cheaper/easier in the long term, and now the cost of reinstating electricity is deemed too inconvenient!

11.03.2026 22:22 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, the trains back in the day when we had a complete country-wide network were steam and diesel.

But how about if instead of making the infrastructure choice to go with airplanes, we had chosen the different infrastructure choice to electrify.

Best time was a century ago. Second best is now.

44,000 passengers to be hit by Air NZ cancellations over fuel, CEO says The airline is set to cancel around 1100 flights over fuel supply concerns, affecting the travel plans of thousands.

Now imagine if we had electrified the inter-city rail we used to have all over this nation.

'May be unusual, doesn't make it wrong': Public Service Commissioner responds to legal action filed by teachers union NZEI, the primary teachers union, filed urgent legal action after the government announced it was offering pay rises to non-unionised teachers.

#nzpol It is totally unacceptable that the Public Service Commissioner is attempting to turn teachers against each other and undermine solidarity across the sector. As New Zealanders we love our teachers. They deserve to be paid what they’re worth.

Commissioner Brian Roche also published anti-union adverts during public service strikes.

Pretty clear whose interests he is serving. #NzPol

This is the same 2020 study you might have seen before, but it's true. I was gamely riding a lightweight street bike when and where I could, but it wasn't until I got an e-bike that the bike became my main means of transport.

Six years ago WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Despite tens of millions of deaths, the world has not sufficiently addressed the ongoing impacts of COVID-19, and we are more vulnerable to future pandemics due to anti-science officials leading government agencies around the world.

True but she knows the value of human life to the ACT Party vs profit for business. Zero. ACT has been driving policies through government that make workers’ unsafer everyday, alongside kids been made unsafer in ECEs and schools.

No donations for 9 days. Please help Shimaa survive Israel's genocide with her little child & mother, who are starving & ill. She's already lost her husband, & she's unable to post regularly because Bsky deletes her ruthlessly.

For those who have forgotten the past 40 years:

Tax cuts for the rich
...don’t trickle down

Boosting military spending
...doesn’t bring peace

Slashing regulations
...doesn’t create jobs

Folks, we’ve seen this all before.

Greenpeace calls for government to drastically cut legal limit of nitrates in drinking water It comes after the Danish government significantly cut its legal limit.

Rural New Zealand's drinking water is being poisoned by dairy industry nitrate. People's health is threatened. And our Govt refuses to act.

We're calling for legal limits for drinking water nitrate to be lowered to under 1 mg/L - just as Denmark intends to do.
