I too would rather ignore politicians but alas they have too much power over how I live.

US used Anthropicβs AI tool Claude, along with Maven Smart, another AI system built by Palantir, to choose 100s of targets in the opening day of airstrikes against Iran
Claude + Maven Smart were used to suggest "hundreds of targets, issue precise location coordinates, and prioritize" those targets

Lots in here, but an upshot I'll be thinking about for a bit: the internet as we know it was a product of a very specific time in world history, when the US was arguably at the peak of its power.
This author argues that as that shifts, so, too, will the internet. www.techpolicy.press/internet...
ai is a rhetorical technology.
when it produces a list of permissible targets, its value is not producing targets but producing permission
The cops control municipal government and have essentially done so since the 70s. Once you understand this, everything else gets clearer.

When I got the contract to write a history of concentration camps in 2014, I hoped to keep the US from ending up here. That didn't work out! But now it's critical to understand how much is already in process and the enormity of what's coming. The sooner we act to stop it, the more people we'll save.
What an inspiring way to spend the morning in San Diego - in alliance with these lovely ~400 cyclists remembering #prettigood #noice
NEW: Until recently, two Minneapolis women have heading out each day on a simple mission: to find and mock Border Patrol field leader Greg Bovino. I talked to one of them and wrote about the strengths and limits of mocking these dripless malevolent losers: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
The people who are saying shit like "well it's either this or the borders are totally open" are doing their best to convince America that we should have completely open borders.
A Minnesota woman observing ICE agents in her car was cornered on one-way streets. An agent approached, called her by nameβciting facial recognition. Days later, her Global Entry and TSA privileges were revoked, with no explanation.
The billions to DHS have built the for-profit panopticon surveillance state they were unable to fully push through after 9/11 because people fought back.
It took 25 years but they have it now.
This cannot be reformed. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/30/t...
This sign is new this week inside the federal building in San Diego (same building where there's been dramatic video of ICE abducting Afghan interpreters and others after their immigration hearings).
I re-read "About Face" by @natepowell.bsky.social tonight. It was always a powerful look at the aesthetics of fascism, but it hits differently in light of the government's assault on Minneapolis.
βMinneapolis reminded me of what I saw during the Arab Spring, a series of street clashes between protesters and police that quickly swelled into a much larger struggle against autocracy,β Robert Worth writes.
A veteran war reporter on βa layered civic uprisingβ against ICE:
Two people sit in a wood-paneled room behind a cardboard sign reading "MUSIC-LED RESISTANCE." The woman on the left gestures while speaking; the man on the right holds a small drum. A QR code for a digital songbook and the logo for "Raise Your Voice San Diego" are visible on the sign. Musical instruments, like a tambourine and shaker, are scattered on the floor.

A few months ago I was curious to know how much Anna's Archive was charging AI developers for access to their massive library of pirated works for training - so I emailed them saying I was interested in buying access.
Here is their reply.

Thanks so much to everyone who has checked in about what itβs like in Minneapolis right now. This should answer most of your questions:
As thousands of immigration agents arrive in Minnesota, neighbors are working together to track, distract and protest ICE. The cat-and-mouse game between activists and agents is escalating as tactics change daily.
In a strange position where I think there are massive, massive social harms to the proliferation of AI (misinfo, deepfakes, predatory 'companions', surveillance, labour rights) but also feel the mainstream arguments against it range from unconvincing (water) to actively harmful (copyright; "soul")

I'd say there were 150 or so folks. I learned about it from a text from @sandiegodsa.bsky.social. This particular protest was organized by PSL, though there were a lot of other orgs in attendance. www.instagram.com/p/DTCm9P_FdoM
