Joe Wright is basically a perfect 'Blank Check' miniseries, between his major highs and WOW his lows.

Oh sure, all that’s terrific. Just in terms of the special effects and visuals, it’s not quite at the sweet spot the show typically is.

I love that the giants are actors on sets with the tiny Straw Hats green screened in later, really gives those scenes a THIEF OF BAGDAD/Harryhausen charm. BUT, I would also argue some of those scenes are a first example of the show just not quite cracking how to make Oda drawings play in live action

Jumping back into ONE PIECE to finish up the Little Garden two-parter. Inaki Godoy doing some amazing "I have no mouth and I must scream" eye acting.

"And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name – ground!

I wonder if it will be friends with me?"

the Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy quote I think of most often these days is, β€œWhat do you mean, why’s it got to be built? It’s a bypass. You’ve got to build bypasses.”

Any connection to certain modern technologies is purely coincidental, and mostly harmless.

β€œYes,” said Arthur, β€œyes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying β€˜Beware of the Leopard.

"But the plans were on display…”
β€œOn display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
β€œThat’s the display department.”
β€œWith a flashlight.”
β€œAh, well, the lights had probably gone.”
β€œSo had the stairs.”
β€œBut look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”

It’s about as good as a sequel to 2001 could possibly be, and really works as a blue collar, procedural take on the ecstatic transcendent events of the first film.

Anytime Usopp starts babbling now, I just start cackling knowing some version of it is getting dropped on his stupid head.

worth remembering, David Lynch directed β€œfix your hearts or die” specifically at transphobes. it wasn’t a generic β€œno mean people allowed” statement, it was said by his Twin Peaks character in defense of a trans woman he cared for and deeply respected.

The actors playing recurring/episodic characters tend to lean hard into the anime-ness in a way that the core cast avoids, and that can be hit or miss. But David Dastmalchian is instantly locked into the exact right freak frequency for this sort of fare.

That observation haki getting an early workout, ain't it God Usopp?

Karoo shout out! A princess's loyal human-sized duck sidekick was probably a bridge too far (and the CG budget is probably maxed out as is). It's fine, it's OK, hey I get it.

but don't you dare deny us our god given right to giant duck antics in season 3.
