We're pleased to announce that the winner of the NZCCL/VUW Law essay prize for 2025 is Jessica Ye for her essay about civil disobedience: "Rupturing the liberal grammar of βcriticalβ civil disobedience theories".

There's undoubtedly a lot of ideas in the report that are worth investigating further, but we don't believe that banning under 16 year olds from social media is one of them.
While there is work to be done to improve internet safety for everyone, we believe that people under 16 also have a right to freedom of expression and association - social media is where a lot of political education, activism and organising gets done.
Very disappointed to see that the Education & Workforce Select Committee has recommended banning people under 16 from using social media websites such as Facebook, Instagream, Snapchat, TikTok, X and more. selectcommittees.parliament.nz/v/6/e05a9618...
My heart sinks at the mandating of this harsh and discretionary police power β and one that is ultimately pointless due to a track record of displacement and failure to deal with the underlying causes etc.

Media Release: Move On orders an overreaction. NZers have an inherent right to be in public places. The govtβs proposed new βmove onβ law change is an attempt to remove that right for homeless people whose greatest crime is that they have no money and nowhere to sleep. nzccl.org.nz/media-releas...
This implies that Australia would allow retail use of facial recognition tech in the future if the retailer does a better job of jumping through the hoops.
Of course, New Zealand has already decided to let retailers self-certify their own requirement for it as they see fit.
Admin Review Tribunal supports the Australian Privacy Commissioner's decision banning Bunnings from using facial recognition tech - but on procedural grounds only, they disagree with the underlying decision about privacy.

The government's new road-side drug testing regime will unfairly pick-up and fine non-impaired drivers - the science just isn't there.

"New technology, including artificial intelligence, increasingly fuels pervasive and seemingly unstoppable intrusive surveillance of workers. Employersβ reach into workersβ private lives has expanded exponentially as a result."

When organisations like @nzccl.org.nz warn that the law allowing data from congestion charging cameras to be shared with police & intelligence agencies is a surveillance risk to all our civil liberties, itβs not hyperbole.
A Place of Firsts - Trust Democracy's event about citizen assemblies as a way of engaging people in complex policy development based on their experience with the Porirua Assembly. It's on Thurs Dec 4th at 6pm at Lecture Theatre 1, Old Government Buildings, VUW. events.humanitix.com/a-place-of-f...
Pleased to see that the Select Committee has followed our recommendation to make the Valuers Registration Board subject to the Official Information Act and the Ombudsmen Act. selectcommittees.parliament.nz/v/6/50867ff2...

Council for Civil Liberties book published in 1985.
This Wednesday 15 Oct is the launch of Protect Protest. many people have concerns with govt proposals to significantly impact the right to protest, so we recommend finding out more protectprotest.nz The coalition includes @nzccl.org.nz so we thought it was a good time to profile a 1985 NZCCL book.
NZ Govt to change law so #NZpolice can take + keep random photos + use them to profile MΔori, particularly young MΔori men. Surveillance state indeed!
#NZpol Pretty sure @nzccl.org.nz won't be impressed.

It's worth noting our observation that the IPCA report that inspired this bill says it's mainly required because their main recommendations provide carve-outs from existing laws. To the best of our knowledge the main recommendations have not been picked up so far, making this bill unnecessary.

We've submitted on the Demonstrations Near Residential Premises Bill, we'll have it online soon but if you want the PDF before the 2pm submission cutoff time you can read it here: nzccl.org.nz/wp-content/u...
We're very sad to be farewelling Andrew. He's been a huge asset for the NZCCL with particular strengths in policy analysis and open government.
One consolation is that it's good to hear he's going to keep fighting for a better OIA and open government as a whole.
Iβm involved in the legislation website work, so this is helpful. Mostly we only heard from devs wanting better data accessβ¦ hence the API. Open access to legislation matters to us, so please do fill out the survey so we can figure out the best way forward. Thanks! www.surveymonkey.com/r/HH5VLL8
