Unfortunately, yes. It's because of the long-running history surrounding the usage of calling black people "monkeys" as a racial slur/aggression. It was used to imply that they were "less evolved" (based on Darwinism) or "less civilized."

like ive been on furaffinity and twitter for over 10 years (gags), and bluesky since it was first invite/ code only and im still less than 350 followers on bsky/twitter (tho i don't use that now) and still less than 800 on FA. it's hard even back when i posted SOOO consistently haha

SUPER fair - though i do think part of it atp is like... while it's still better than Twitter i don't think people without many followers get pushed out as much as they did when at the start of bsky's life where there was like 30% of the current userbase even here
