Pentagon Opens Probe Into Sexual Abuse by U.S. Allies in Afghanistan | FRONTLINE | PBS | Official Site | Documentary Series The Defense Department's Inspector General has opened an investigation into whether U.S. troops were discouraged from reporting the rape and sexual abuse of children by their Afghan allies.

There are many vectors by which war leads directly and indirectly to the sexual abuse of children, as well.

Fewer Than a Third of U.S. Voters Know Where Iran Is: Survey Asked to point to Iran on a map, respondents pointed to the Irish Sea, France, and even the United States.

Seems like one of those things where the scale of the threat would become immediately apparent to anyone who could read a map. Which, apparently most Americans can't, so...

Dinosaur erotica - Wikipedia

I think bespoke erotica is one genre that would probably have a bottomless thirst for AI-generated text and not really inconvenience human authors.

Dunno why we needed to invent a machine to spew fevered hallucinations when we got a living master of it already running the country.

If the average seasoned journalist were earning $250k from investments, then I'd guess that unpaid internships did indeed succeed at screening people who lack inherited wealth out of the profession.

I suppose it could be a tonic for the loneliness epidemic if we all raised a glass of custom-ordered specialty drinks to the disphittery of Professor Incel.

I think you can do a good job within a bad system, which can lead to outcomes that satisfy all procedural goals (it was a fair trial for actual offenses with a reasonable penalty) while also advancing toxic goals (identifying loyalists, entrenching the highest seditionists in power).

Past Middle Eastern refugee flows have destabilized Western European democracies... which seems to be an American priority at the moment.

If the whole movement weren't marked by disingenuity to its very core, I suppose it'd be surprising that "America First" is actually far down the line of contemporary democratic backslides, and pretty unexceptional in its methods and goals.

most everyone who's written about this from a philosophy of mind perspective has also argued a definition of consciousness alongside it. tech guys post things like this without having "done the reading" so to speak because they believe other fields are beneath them.

"Get Out the Vote" is such a critical part of campaign operations it has its own shorthand acronym - GOTV operations. It is not just part of the candidate's job, a lot of money is raised to facilitate it.

That is kinda the whole point of what campaigns are built to do.

Also seems worth noting that we have moral duties towards humans even when they have lost consciousness. It is not the end-all qualification for a subject of moral duty.

The weird thing to me at the time was that anyone even found the idea appealing. Like, that's when I first realized the great selling point of contemporary tech is sociopathic avoidance of human contact. Trains are fine to ride if you don't hate people.

"Interstellar" always intrigued me for that reason. As a film it fails on many levels, but to get the financing to fail interestingly directors have to knock out several formulaic blockbusters. I'd like to see more resources dedicated to taking a try on different ways of telling stories.

I'm having a complete failure of recall on the company's name. It was based in SF, and it would have been circa 2002, so it was really sort of a tail end crash from the Dot Bomb era. They had a prototype outside the Marina Safeway that was just for display.
