A DOGE staffer testified that a documentary about Jewish women used as slave labor during the Holocaust was targeted for termination because it was "inherently related to DEI."

The later revised version feels like it had the hand of a producer or someone (maybe SP himself) deciding to make it one act instead of two and so on. That original '79 production with Antony Sher, Toyah, and so on is top of my list for shows I'd most want to time travel to see.
Oh oh oh! Here's that best version of the script: archive.org/details/amer...
I like the idea of Kareem in 2060 doing Subway Takes with a giant Letterman-in-retirement beard and a walker.
I mean:
Really really really wanted to stage his "American Days" after finding the production script in a used bookstore in Evanston, and still think it would be amazing with the right cast. (The revised version in 'Plays: One' isn't as good.) Best play I know about the punk Pistols era.
Underrated recent Cale moment: when Marc Maron tossed out that Eno invented spa music, and Cale was offended enough to make him explain what he meant.
Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads: The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same... - Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist
Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.
holy shit
The ICE jail in Georgia will be the largest jail or prison in the US, by a substantial margin. Itβs in a warehouse with no HVAC, medical, or sanitation facilities. ICE didnβt even contact the city, which says it doesnβt have enough electricity or sewage processing.
OR -- he DGAF because his real interests are about handing Saudi Arabia an oil monopoly because of his own personal interests.
Thread. Follow the money, follow the wars.
I love that @modernlanguage.bsky.social has posted the depositions of the DOGE bros who gutted the National Endowment for the Humanities. All part of the lawsuit the MLA, AHA, and ACLS have filed against the federal government.
Then what?
βBlow the hell out of these peopleβ is a means, not an end.
Kill and destroy in pursuit of⦠?
Expect the violent means to achieve positive ends because⦠?
This is the Israeli playbook from Gaza (and Putin's in Ukraine for that matter) and it is ultra-disturbing to see the US carry out repeated attacks on civilian infrastructure. It simply does not serve a military purpose.
what the dog doin
Oh, so this is why they've finally responded on their IG...
Worth watching the whole clip, but purely in propaganda terms it seems to me, admittedly just an amateur observer when it comes to war fighting, that it may be useful to send the message to the 91+ million Iranian civilians that we are not trying to kill them.
This reminds me of something Toni Morrison wrote.
Listening to Jim Croce at work
PAT RYAN: 'Does the US want to be the policeman of the Middle East getting nothing but spending precious lives & trillions.' Rng a bell?
COLBY: Defer to you
R: That was Trump. How about this - 'we simply cannot afford to get enmeshed in a Middle East war'
C: Defer to you
R: That was actually you

1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health
Just thinking about how, before buying Paramount, Ellison's time at Skydance was so mid-to-bad that Paramount executives had to tell him that his taste in movies is garbage. www.vulture.com/article/larr...
A fantastic WSJ video by Jaden Urbi offers a look behind what goes into a Broadway show, with the viewpoint of a second-generation theatre electrician, and including the revival of Chicago that's been running almost 30 years.

Not unlike going to war without convincing anyone first...
Apparently Pearl Harbor wasnβt an invasion.
Neko Case and Carolyn Mark, if you donβt knowβ¦.
I know the lower market segments arenβt traveling as much in this economy, but I have some advice for even middle income travelers.
Make sure you have the financial resources to handle getting stuck somewhere for extra time if something should happen. Itβs becoming increasingly common
