Iran are fighting an existential religious war against the 'American empire', which they see as corrupt and antithetical to life. This Trumpian manifestation of empire is seen as those things by many people in Europe and elsewhere (who mostly do not side with Iran in any way). It's a messy business.
I wouldn't use a direct analogy with the American War on Vietnam, but this is pretty much right in my view.
