"You have only read four books, but you want people to know what they are."
Oooh, interesting idea, thanks!
Oooh, yeah, that's not bad! I could get a bunch of old mass markets (RIP π ) on that.
Thank you, this is helpful! I may well be looking at a compromise option. Price isn't my only concern at this point (and wow is it nice to be in a place where I can say that), but it's still *a* concern.
A display case with an open frame. Its shelves are arranged around a big circle cut-out in the middle, itself around a little square.
Look, this is a neat *display* case, but I just do not think you should in good conscience be allowed to call it a *book*case.
(Brackets and braces have, alas, not helped enough; the particle board can't hold up to the forces exerted by my tomes. π )
That's actually super helpful to know! I might just need to invest in *new* Billys, and maybe paint them a fun color, since the ones I've had since, uh, college have, over the course of several moves, developed some concerning tendencies to lean.
Yeah, I actually don't hate the open frame premise if the shelves were just normal, but in addition to worrying about tipping over, you'd need bookends, which takes up space that could be occupied by *books*. I can't waste valuable real estate like that. π
I have a bunch of Billys in my storage unit, but the trouble is, at this point they've been moved so many times that they've lost structural integrity. π
Another open frame bookshelf. This one is relatively normal to the left and right, but the center section has diagonal shelves, which are neither space-efficient nor, I feel, a sensible way to store books! What happens when you need one? Why fight gravity??
Is this a joke? Tell me this is a joke.
Anyway if anyone has recommendations for where you can get decent bookshelves designed to actually hold books, not just attractively staged curios, that are sturdy & simple & an upgrade from Ikea but still suitable for apartment life, lmk kthx
(This is actually me being unfair to myself. I do cull my books. But the problem is, taking away even a quarter or a third of a very large number still leaves you with... a very large number.)
Mom: You could cull some of your hoard.
Me: I'm sorry, I don't understand the words you just said.
An open-frame "bookshelf" with several tiers of unevenly spaced shelves and a giant crescent moon shaped swoop inexplicably cutting across it.
Another open frame bookcase, this one with staggered tiers of shelves, utterly insufficient for holding a vast quantity of books.
I mean what the geometric nonsense is this?
(Honestly I *need* more than that, but I'm gonna be running out of wall space as it is)
Trying to shop for bookshelves and it's like: No, no, I don't want it to look artistic or fancy. I don't need "a dynamic look." I don't need it to be a statement piece or a work of art.
I quite simply need it to hold as many books as physically possible.
And then I need eight of them.
"We can decide that we want to be human."
Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Gods, I just want to shake people until they understand what essential humanity they're surrendering to these corporate-drive, fascism-enabling plagiarism machines.
Well. This is both deeply troubling and about exactly what I expected.
#WIPSnips Mar 10: Had to go with synonym "section" for this one.
From the walls of Minas Tirith, Pippin and Beregond watch Faramir and three other men race desperately towards the city under the shadow of five NazgΓ»l. What looks like a bright star on the fields is Gandalf riding south. Light flashes from his hand. The NazgΓ»l retreat.
In the gloom of a day without dawn, ThΓ©oden on his horse Snowmane rides out from Dunharrow leading six thousand spears to war. They take paths leading downhill towards Edoras on the plain. Merry rides behind Γomer and the king, on his pony Stybba.
Feel free to tell Toni how much AI we want. (None.)
Just keep genAI and algorithms the hell away from us. Weβre here because itβs not the other place. Donβt fuck it up.
I love my day job so much, and Iβm incredibly fortunate that it is also a creative job and even pays me adult money, but it does mean sometimes thereβs just nothing left in the tank for my own work.
#WIPSnips Mar 9: Only use in the manuscript as it presently stands! Have a little alchemy, as a treat.
I know hindsight etc etc but this stat really irks me given the amount of people who complained that Harris spent too much time talking about the threat to democracy
Four-panel comic on a dark textured background featuring a fluffy black cat with very large round eyes looking directly at the viewer. In the first panel the text reads βYou there,β. In the second panel it says βYes, you.β In the third panel it says βJust knowβ¦β. In the final panel the catβs eyes contain heart shapes and the text reads βIβm cheering for you.β The signature βpurr.in.inkβ appears in the corner.
