The deadline to register for the 2026 Isotopes in Biogenic Silica (IBiS) Meeting is today! Come for a friendly get-together to talk and learn about all things #silica in the great, fun city of Bristol! www.ibis2026.org
@michaelhenehan
Senior Lecturer at the School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol. Isotope geochemist/palaeoclimatologist/micropalaeontologist.. Like politics, music and West Ham. Not a fan of cloves. Or Elon Musk.

Theyβre deranged - I literally listened to the speech and heard him say Iceland (also yesterday at the White House btw). They are relying on people being too lazy to find this out themselves. Despicable.
ππ»Mark Carney.. from a country on the frontier- brave, principled and inspiring
Still a week left to apply for this PhD opportunity @bas.ac.uk, working on palaeoecology of #Antarctic marine ecosystems in the #Eocene (deadline 13/1/25). Please get in touch if you're interested and want to know more about the project or the application process!
Artists rendition of the death of the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age from this great paper by Hana Jurikova @mudwaterclimate.bsky.social and others (www.nature.com/articles/s41...). The papers also contains some lovely boron isotope data tracing CO2 300 million years ago! π§ͺβοΈπ
Come do a PhD with us at Bristol! Looking for a student to look at B incorporation into silica - both experimentally-precipitated and biogenic.. With @krhendry.bsky.social @sophwestacott.bsky.social and Franziska Stamm. Deadline Monday 13th of January! DM or email me for more details. bit.ly/3W8WshH
There are more than 10m children in school in the UKβ¦but, per Times, 3,000 might move to state sector because of VAT riseβ¦so Whitehall is βbracedβ π²π²π²
Says a lot about UK media bubble, the way this story is reported.
You pay VAT on luxuries. Private schooling is that.
Taphonomy of organelles and the origin of eukaryotes with @phil-donoghue.bsky.social @jameswclark.bsky.social @tweethinking.bsky.social Davide Pisani, John Cunningham [NERC GW4+ Jan 13]
Ground-truthing the boron isotope-pH proxy in biogenic silica with @michaelhenehan.bsky.social [NERC GW4+ Jan 13]
Back in Villefranche! Reunited with our lovely hosts. First day plankton sampling today- wish us luck (or more specifically lots of radiolarians!)
The first paper from my student Simon Ring's PhD thesis is out now! He quantifies boron partitioning and isotope fractionation during adsorption onto different clay minerals.. refining the mechanisms for how it works and what it means for global B fluxes. doi.org/10.1016/j.gc...
π¦I'm readvertising a PhD project at Bristol applying B isotopes to Cretaceous Ocean Anoxic Events as part of the @petrarch-project.bsky.social . Deadline April 12th, starts mid-September. See www.bristol.ac.uk/media-librar... for details! RTs (or RBSs?) appreciated.
2nd PhD project within the Petrarch project still open- deadline 14th Feb.. come work within a lovely team to figure out how large igneous provinces and maybe the biological pump interacted to drive Cretaceous OAEs..

in beautiful St Andrews(1 postdoc, 1 lab tech) studying volcanic forcing of climate. FWIW I am definitely better at science & supervising than social media!π©π»βπ¬ Deadline extended Jan 10.Β tinyurl.com/29c6ebxcΒ &Β tinyurl.com/mpd7tphh
Wills Memorial Building, home of the School of Earth Sciences, at sunset
Apologies for copied Twitter handles that don't exist here (yet).. anyway, if you know of some talented MScs/BScs, tell them to come join our lovely department! 7/7
Application deadlines vary with each project. For those applying for the Bristol ones you need to select 'PhD Geology' when applying, and can copy the given PhD blurb in as the project description (silly centralised UoB application system makes little sense, sorry) 6/7
Fifth a fully-funded project with David Naafs here at UoB working on calibrating new molecular biomarker proxies for the climate www.bristol.ac.uk/media-librar..., with more going on Critical Zone geochemistry at Durham with Jotis Baronas (see www.jbaronas.com) .. to name a few! 5/7
Fourth fully-funded for home students with David Evans at University of Southampton using cutting edge methods to figure out how foraminifera calcify www.southampton.ac.uk/study/postgr... 4/7
Third is a mainly modelling project NERC UK student project with Lewis Alcott, together with me, Cait Witkowski, Tim Lenton and Erik Sperling on what has been key to making Earth planet habitable bit.ly/HabitableBri... . . 3/7
Second with me, @SophWestacott and @KRHendry at @UoBEarthScience is NERC-funded for UK students, trying to ground truth the boron isotope-pH proxy in biogenic silica with experiments and open ocean samples bit.ly/silicaB_Bris... .. 2/7
Loads of PhD openings, some with me, some not (a thread π§΅)- please spread the word (π). First is a @PETRARCHproject one with me at @UoBEarthScience , open to all nationalities, working on the causal drivers of Cretaceous OAEs with boron isotopes bit.ly/petrarch2 . . 1/7
They're vile things.. except when sufficiently masked in mulled wine.
Wow, seems like I'm late to the party.. what have I missed? Not a great URL - evokes Murdoch BSkyB..
