Snow does not fall but is everywhere on the ground; centered is a man setting tennis racket-esque skiis on his feet. Artist is shown but I can't make it out.

The travel westward was never easy and always dangerous, but sometimes the danger came from within. The Donner Party faced a number of setbacks that forced them to stay in the Sierra Nevadas in winter 1846-47, relying on cannibalism to survive. #WyrdWednesday

In a world where female rulers were rare because political power was held by men, Cartimandua was a tactical ruler. This image depicts Cartimandua delivering a captive to a Roman general.

Horse or bull

What a thrill to see this unusual variation on an ancient Cypriot jug with a figurine on the shoulder at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery @notjustabattle.bsky.social Originally interpreted as a bull, restoration makes him look more like a horse - a fantastical winged beast at any rate.

Woman Playing Gekin by Baron Raimund Von Stillfried
This hand-colored photograph from the 1870s, captured by Baron Raimund Von Stillfried, provides a rare and delicate glimpse into Meiji-period Japan. The portrait features a young woman seated and holding a gekin (a moon-shaped lute), a traditional instrument that was popular during the Edo and early Meiji eras. She is dressed in a purple striped kimono with a floral-patterned under-collar, her hair meticulously styled in a traditional nihongami arrangement.

The gekin is the central focus, its round, wooden body showing fine grain and decorative dark carvings. The woman’s expression is calm and poised, with the hand-coloring adding a soft, lifelike blush to her cheeks and a subtle vibrance to the fabric of her garment. The neutral, plain background emphasizes the subject’s silhouette and the intricate details of the instrument, reflecting Von Stillfried’s mastery in combining Western photographic techniques with Japanese aesthetic sensibilities to document the changing culture of the time.
