The "basic" in universal basic income does not mean low. It means basic as in base. Foundational. Primary. First. Basic income is an income floor. All other income adds to it. It's basic income because it's everyone starting income.

Doubling local GDP didn’t drive inflation Our large scale cash injection was equivalent to doubling the economy in Khongoni. Compared to surrounding areas, inflation in Khongoni rose by about 1% – a statistically detectable but economically negligible effect. After five months, this had fallen to zero. Markets were able to absorb large-scale transfers without driving significant price inflation. That gives us strong evidence that this model can be scaled responsibly and rapidly without triggering harmful inflation. This stability was a product of how recipients and markets responded: 🗓️ Recipients didn’t spend all at once: Findings showed households did not spend all of the transfer immediately and gradually increased their spending over months. 🚲 They also shopped around: Recipients had access to multiple markets, locally and in nearby Lilongwe city, allowing them to choose between sellers if someone didn’t have what they needed or tried to raise prices. 🤝 Vendors chose not to raise prices: Traders reported keeping prices steady to maintain trust, saying opportunistic hikes would damage their reputation once the cash was gone. 📦 Markets adapted to demand: Many vendors simply ordered more stock and new traders entered markets, both without significantly driving up prices.
GiveDirectly gave $550 to every adult in the Khongoni subdistrict of Malawi, reaching over 85,000 people. It was enough outside money to double local GDP. Extreme poverty plummeted by 88%. Inflation was negligible.
Now they're going even bigger by giving $550 to 185,000 people - an entire district.
A HUGE rural universal basic income pilot project is moving forward in South Korea and scheduled to launch next year. The plan is for everyone in 6 counties (out of 69) to receive a UBI of 150,000 won every month for 2 years, which is about equal to $200/mo in the US. 150k-270k people would get UBI!
Our economy is running on the spending of the top 10%. It does not care about the bottom 60%. I think this is also why they aren't pushing for universal basic income right when you'd think they would to maintain consumer buying power. Our consumer economy has become reoriented around elite spending.
A full Basic Income would eliminate the compulsion to work, by offering a reasonable standard of living to all, and then either leaving it up to each individual to decide whether they wished to pursue further wealth, by doing a paying job, or selling something, or whether they wished to do something else with their time. Alternately, it might open the way to developing better ways of distributing goods entirely. (Money is after all a rationing ticket, and in an ideal world, one would presumably wish to do as little rationing as possible. Obviously, all this depends on the assumption that human beings don't have to be compelled to work, or at least, to do something that they feel is useful or beneficial to others. As we've seen, this is a reasonable assumption. Most people would prefer not to spend their days sitting around watching TV and the handful who really are inclined to be total parasites are not going to be a significant burden on society, since the total amount of work required to maintain people in comfort and security is not that formidable. The compulsive workaholics who insist on doing far more than they really have to would more than compensate for the occasional slackers. . - David Graeber
