I know this is a very long shot, but...
Can anyone possibly point me towards an English translation of volume 1 of The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Pictures (1886)? So far, I can only find it in German, & sadly, while I could have read that 25 years ago, I really can't anymore. Alas!

Alysa Liu on Eileen Gu, via The New York Times "I think people are hypocritical for shaming her for representing China ... Y'all would have told her to go back to China. Now that they're back in China, you're mad."

A graphic with text on the top reading "COVER REVEAL" and on the bottom reading "Coming September 22, 2026" with an illustrated book cover with text at the top that reads: award-winning and bestselling author Sonido Reyes. The title at the bottom reads: To Our Untamed Core. A Brown boy stands in front of the title font with his back to the "camera" looking off to the side. There is a hole through his back that has a beam of light shining through it. In the distance is a pyramid with the sun behind its peak, the sunlight shining straight through the hole in the boy's back.
Centuries after the conquistadors claimed the Afueras for their own, Temo spends his life obeying the Holy Orderโs decree, undergoing their sacraments to tame his supposedly violent nature. The only rule he breaks: hiding that heโs trans. If that fact is discovered, Temo will face El Torneo, a brutal, fight-to-the-death game pitting the untamed against one another. No Afuereรฑo who enters El Torneo ever escapes with their life. But when Temoโs boyfriend is unexpectedly arrested and thrown into the deadly tournament, heโll do anything to rescue Ollin from his gruesome fate, even if it means entering El Torneo himself. Only there's far more to this tournament than meets the eyeโsurvival is just the beginning. When the cost of saving the one he loves is higher than he ever imagined, is Temo willing to pay it?
A graphic that reads " Yesterday, we were each a single drop of blood... Tomorrow, it will rain."
The rumors are true! (and I may or may not have started them ๐คญ)

I have been asking myself "do kids movies suck now or am I just a grown up?" ever since Turning Red (I wanted to like it! I'm Asian! but it was... meh) and I'm happy to see someone articulate this conundrum better than I; perhaps it's not just being a grown up.

Elaine Castillo covers this really well in "How to Read Now" - reading "good" books doesn't make you a better person or a better thinker if you don't put in the work to think about them. Reading diverse books is not "an ehtical protein shake."
Reading text-dense materials is an important skill to develop! So is reading mixed-media materials! It's less about what you read than how you read it!
I see this with parents at the library with kids who read a stack of graphic novels a day lamenting that the kid doesn't read "real" books. Or say "I want my kid to love reading!" and then steer the kid away from everything they are interested in.
I do think part of this has come back to bite us with certain types of media consumption being considered superior to others - books are ranked highest, and within that some books are better than others, because reading is "good for you." like eating spinach.

I generally don't react to my deadname anymore, except for the other day when I was waiting in line for a burrito at a food truck and the person before me had my deadname and I almost took it ๐ญ
(It was a very good burrito)
But yeah, never liked the name, being trans was a good excuse to change it.
I sometimes still think of my deadname as "mine," just not a name I use. Like it's sitting in a glass display case gathering dust. Or maybe gathering cobwebs at the back of the closet. A name I drag it out a couple times a year to do paperwork.
Every trans person is different!
If you want to read more about my thoughts on this, I'll have a newsletter coming tomorrow that goes more in depth
2. Please do not boycott my old books for having my old name on them! Think of them as limited-edition, pre-pokemon evolution copies of Sonido Reyes books lol (3/8)

Utterly baffled by the way people will say "you can't build a house in your backyard because we don't want homeless people here!" my dude if they have a house... they aren't homeless...
(I know it's bc these people think of unhoused folks as a separate species, but yikes)
