Orban rebukes Zelensky over troops quip, labels it blackmail amid Druzhba pipeline dispute
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban showed how he listened to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement in which the Ukrainian leader said Ukrainian military personnel could speak with the Hungarian premier.
Orban called Zelensky’s remark a “threat,” after the Ukrainian president suggested that, if Budapest keeps blocking a 90 billion-euro EU loan to Kyiv, Ukrainian troops could “talk” to the Hungarian leader.
The prime minister posted a video on his Facebook page showing him in his office watching Zelensky’s address and commenting on it.
The Hungarian leader labeled the Ukrainian president’s words “blackmail” and a “threat,” urging an end to what he called an “oil blockade” and to allow oil to flow to Hungary through the Druzhba pipeline.
“Mr. President, I received your message. You threatened me with soldiers and, through me, all of Hungary. Mr. President, this will not work. Stop this. This is Hungary. Hungarians cannot be blackmailed, and you will not be able to intimidate me,” Orban said.
Earlier this week, Zelensky, speaking after a government meeting, expressed hope that “one person” in the EU—an apparent reference to Orban—would stop blocking European aid to Ukraine. He joked that otherwise he would give that person’s phone number to Ukrainian soldiers so they could talk to him.
In February Orban pledged to block the European credit for Ukraine until Kyiv restores operations of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which supplies Russian crude to Budapest. Ukraine, for its part, has repeatedly said the pipeline is down due to damage from Russian strikes. Hungary’s government argues Kyiv is keeping the line offline for “political reasons.”
On March 5, Orban released a video address vowing to secure the resumption of Russian oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline “by force.”

Zelensky says Ukrainian forces retake up to 435 square kilometers in the south, foiling Russia’s plans
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian troops have thwarted Russia’s plans to advance in southern Ukraine and carried out a series of counteroffensive actions.
As a result of those counterattacks, roughly 400–435 square kilometers have been brought back under Ukrainian control, Zelensky said during a joint briefing with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, according to the state news agency Ukrinform .
In a Telegram post , Zelensky noted that the new head of the Dutch government visited Kyiv almost immediately after taking office.
“I informed the Prime Minister about the situation on the battlefield, about Russia’s attacks, which do not stop for a single day. We need stable, sustained support every day while the war continues,” the Ukrainian president said.
Zelensky said Ukrainian forces derailed Russia’s plans in the south, preventing advances along the boundary of the Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions.
“In the south of our country, over the past six weeks we conducted a number of important defensive actions, and in some directions, offensive ones. These actions were solely to disrupt Russia’s plans. We consider them quite successful — we have restored control over about 400–435 square kilometers,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky also said Russia is planning a new offensive operation in the spring, with the aim of seizing Donetsk and Luhansk regions. At the same time, he stressed that Russian forces cannot achieve that “with the means and forces they currently have — and because of the actions of our Armed Forces.”
The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said on the morning of March 8 that Russian troops attempted assaults on the Oleksandrivka and Hulyaipole axes. In total, Russia launched 12 attacks in those directions — near Verbove, Novohryhorivka, Vorone, Dobropillya, Zaliznychne, Varvarivka, Myrne and Zelene.
Earlier, Zelensky said Russia’s military command is preparing a new offensive in eastern Ukraine, likely targeting Druzhkivka, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
French outlet Le Monde has reported that the city of Dnipro could be among Russia’s potential targets in the event of a new offensive.
Taras Chmut, a member of the supervisory board of Ukraine’s Defense Procurement Agency, previously said Ukrainian forces have, for the first time in a long while, been de-occupying more land than Russian troops are seizing.
On February 21, Vladyslav Voloshyn, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Defense Forces in the south, said more than 300 square kilometers had been liberated in Zaporizhzhia region.

Trump alleges interpreter changed meaning during talks with Putin, raising doubts about Ukraine negotiations
A new wrinkle in negotiations between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin involves translation difficulties, which the U.S. president blamed on an interpreter.
US President Donald Trump unexpectedly raised the issue of translation at international talks and effectively acknowledged that, in meetings with world leaders, the meaning of his words might have been distorted. His remarks sparked a stir because, judging by the context, he was referring to talks with Putin, writes the news outlet Agentsvo .
At the “Shield of America” summit in Florida, Trump told participants about a situation that occurred during negotiations with “a very influential person from another part of the world.”
According to the US president, he noticed the translation sounded significantly shorter than his original remarks. That raised suspicions for him.
“When you deliver a long, flowing sentence and the interpreter renders it in a quarter of the time, you start to think something’s off,” Trump said.
He added that such translation can sometimes create the impression that a meeting went well, even though the substance of the conversation may have been conveyed differently.
Almost immediately after those remarks, Trump mentioned Putin, prompting observers to link his account to negotiations with the Russian leader. The US president also said that in one instance the interpreter allegedly even changed the meaning of what was said because she “disagreed” with the substance of the conversation.
“So what now - should we consider her the foreign minister?” Trump said wryly.
Trump’s statement raises an important question: could the US president have been receiving a distorted picture of talks with the Kremlin? Moscow has long been known for employing complex diplomatic and information maneuvers. If the translation was indeed inaccurate or controlled by the Russian side, it could have affected perceptions of the negotiations and the Kremlin’s true intentions regarding Ukraine.

Zelensky says Russia and Iran coordinating strikes across regions from Europe to the Middle East
There are reports that Russians are providing intelligence to Iran to adjust strikes on Americans, and evidence of Russian-made components in Shahed drones used in the Middle East, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly video address Saturday .
Zelensky thanked “every leader, every country” that supports the PURL program, which allows the purchase of US-made air-defense missiles for Patriot systems.
“We all understand the risks posed by strikes from Iran and the need for air-defense missiles in the Middle East. It is important that the protection of life is also ensured here in Ukraine. Moreover, we see information about Russian assistance to the Iranian regime: there are reports that Russians are giving intelligence to the regime in Iran to adjust strikes on Americans. There are also data about Russian components in ‘Shaheds’ used in the Middle East—against Arab countries and against Americans in the region. Every such fact shows that we are dealing with regimes that are not just connected to each other, but that exist thanks to each other—the Russian and Iranian regimes—and that they are killing in a coordinated way both here in Europe and there in the Middle East,” Zelensky said.
The President added that this is why defense must be coordinated.
“Life in Europe and life in the Middle East equally deserve effective protection. We, for our part, are working to help with defense against ‘Shaheds.’ It is entirely fair to expect that our own defense will receive appropriate assistance, and that Russia will feel consequences not only for prolonging its war against us, but also for attempts to scale up that other war,” he said.

Ukraine says it struck Pantsir-S1 system and BK-16 landing craft in Crimea, hitting UAV control points and command posts
Ukraine says its forces struck several high-value Russian military targets overnight, including a BK-16 landing craft and a Pantsir-S1 air-defense system in Russian-occupied Crimea. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, according to Ukraine’s General Staff .
The overnight campaign aimed to degrade Russia’s offensive capabilities, the General Staff said.
The Pantsir-S1 system and the BK-16 boat were hit in Crimea, with damage evaluations ongoing. The air-defense system is valued at roughly $15 million and the landing craft at up to $5 million, according to Ukrainian estimates.
Ukrainian forces also targeted four Russian UAV control points in Crimea, Russia’s Belgorod region, and in Russian-occupied parts of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions. Command-and-observation posts near Nyzhni Rohachyky in Zaporizhzhia, as well as near Novopetrivka, Volnovakha and Selydove in Donetsk region, were also struck, the General Staff said. The scope of damage is being determined.
“Systematic strikes on enemy air defenses, command posts and military infrastructure reduce its ability to control forces, coordinate unmanned systems and conduct combat operations,” the General Staff said.

Ukraine to send military experts to the Middle East next week, Zelensky says
The first Ukrainian team of military experts will arrive in the Middle East as soon as next week to help Gulf countries with military know-how and share air-defense expertise.
President Volodymyr Zelensky on March 8 confirmed that the initial group from Ukraine will deploy next week to assist Gulf nations, speaking at a news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, according to Suspilne .
“I think next week, when the experts are on the ground, they’ll assess and help, because they’re going with the ability to help right away,” Zelensky said.
He added that the Middle East fields many different air-defense systems, including U.S.-made Patriot systems, but they have proved insufficient against modern attacks.
Earlier, it emerged that the United States and at least one Gulf country are in talks to purchase Ukrainian interceptor drones to counter Iranian Shahed drones.

US warns Russia not to share intelligence with Iran, Witkoff says
The United States has told Russia not to share intelligence with Iran — and even if Tehran is receiving information from Moscow, it isn’t helping the ayatollahs’ regime on the battlefield, according to the White House.
Washington underscored to Moscow that providing intelligence to Iran is unacceptable.
The message was delivered by President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One.
“I stated that firmly,” Witkoff told reporters when asked about the warning. He added that he hopes Russia took his advice.
President Donald Trump said Washington has no confirmation that Moscow is providing such assistance - and even if it is, it hasn’t shifted the situation on the ground.
“We don’t know. But things are not going very well. If they are getting information, it’s not helping them much,” Trump told reporters.
The Washington Post has reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is receiving from Russia the coordinates of U.S. ships and aircraft in the Middle East.
That would amount to Moscow unofficially and indirectly joining the conflict on Iran’s side, White House officials say.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country is prepared to apologize and halt strikes on neighboring nations.
Even so, Tehran again attacked Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, where explosions were heard.
On March 8, CNN reported that Israel announced a new phase of the war in Iran, launching strikes on the country’s oil storage facilities.
