I mean, The Crow is one of my all time favorites and has some great cinematography in there. And I’d probably be murdered by someone if I put it on this list (regardless of its EPIC soundtrack):
But…is it Actually A Good Movie? Hmm.

Oh, definitely. I feel like I’m left pondering “wait what defines a ‘bad’ movie”
Like. Great cinema~ is kind of know it when you see it but a ‘good’ movie..: or like, okay but not bad…???
I was debating this one! The soundtrack is 🔥and I truly love the concept of mixing genres that they used, but I can’t decide if it’s actuslly a BAD movie or just a really bizarre one. But it’s definitely not a GREAT movie, so yeah, upvote
(…which is actually true of most things Alexandra Patsavas touched in that era. If we did a TV show version of this I bet it’d be half her work.)
Oh yeah, this one was 100% better soundtrack than movie. Great stuff on there.
It links up in my head to The OC — didn’t feel eh about the plot for the same REASON, but same indie vibes, and the soundtrack was, almost regardless of how much you liked or hated it, at LEAST twice as good.

some pretty quality VERY 2003 alt rock(/post-grunge/edge-of-nu-metal?)! Fuel, Evanescence (x2), Seether, bizarrely kind of a banger of an original song by the Calling….etc. Plus, debuted the single off the first album of one of my favorite little bands, Revis
That and the fact that they can’t even imagine someone protesting of their own will without cash in hand, which is pretty sad
In my experience fanworks have OFTEN used the opportunity to explore much further than published media can, represent communities that are barely hinted at, or point out dynamics that aren’t focused on — because there’s not the pressure to be marketable.
I think there’s a real tendency to denigrate fanfic as purely sexual or wish-fulfilling, and/or less complex or nuanced than original writing. I don’t think that’s the case at all. It varies like all writing. Dark romance and pro-gov thrillers are huge original lit genres.
On the other hand, there are like 800% more versions of apologia; HP particularly was full of them (something something JKR haunting the narrative?).
Plus Minneapolis (possibly all of MN? forget the numbers) is more than half again as unionized as the average in the US so things like a general strike…
If you thought your “only a rich man could be powerful” bogeyman George Soros was scary wait’ll you meet the collective strength of the working class
There’s a “this must be organized from outside - why isn’t it happening in eg Texas?” thing making the rounds, those are their marching orders rn. Well yr half right, FB grandpa with security talking point. The people are getting organized. What you must grasp is they are doing this themselves
(Can’t Hardly Wait.)
Love this movie but it’s probably not “good”:
A TIMES SQUARE FAN! I unabashedly love the movie, too, but that’s partly because we actually covered it in my queer cinema class and got to hear all the drama, so I can kinda write in what it was supposed to be like vs what you actually see.
Daredevil
Was this not like. Incredibly well known about a year after AtTSS came out?
(It’s still a banger tho. 13/14 y/o me was THRILLED by it being on TRL. Whatever! People in queer movies weren’t all gay, still watched every awful example I could get my hands on.
…bc I was a rly great ally obv *coughs*)
(I keep trying to think of examples of this being done well and both the fanfic and lit that sprang to mind was Tamsyn Muir, so I’m just going to steal her references and make the obvious “Nabokov isn’t Dark Romance but if you slapped a ship tag on Lolita it would look like it was” comparison. )
I will caveat that there are fics that would be superficially sorted as dark romance that are in fact critiques, or examinations, but yeah, there’s a difference if you actually read them.
I think portraying evil as obvious and stock (fanfic or original) is also dangerous. But the intent matters.
“Fanfiction” doesn’t stop you from doing that. You can choose to examine and politicize MORE, too.
In other news, water wet.
(Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read it though. Just. “Model repeatedly positioned as a terrible idea in major sci fi franchises turns out to in fact be a terrible idea” ….)
-5°F in Minneapolis tonight.
At the site where feds killed Alex Pretti, the air still smells faintly of tear gas. Hundreds of people still here behind some impromptu barricades.
Message spray painted on the road reads, "fuck ICE, love always wins."
Strength, solidarity and love to everybody in the Twin Cities - Minnesota is showing America exactly how to rise up and resist this fascist dictatorship, and your courage in the face of this nightmare is inspiring beyond words.
For those who can, here are links to donate directly to local efforts on the ground resisting ICE's terrorizing of Minneapolis. Let me know what you donated to where, and I'll match it until I get a panicked call from my bank!

Three Democrats who previously broke with the party and voted with the GOP are now saying they will not vote for the bill. That’s enough for the bill to be unpassable right now.
Ehhh, we can eat them without granting state power over executions.
Yes. Joy inspires us to act. The precious moments we have for ourselves and each other are what we are fighting for. Joy and love keep us human, and that is what they want to take from us.
*waves generally at the CPD from midcentury to now* :|||
This is what they say about white, cis male, legal citizens who devote their lives to the critical care of veterans. People who just ask another protestor if they’re okay. Who have legal gun permits, were already disarmed, restrained, outnumbered.
We’re so fucking far past “first they came for”.
