last sci-fi for the year, I promise
I built a procedural medieval island map generator using Wave Function Collapse on hex grids. 4,100 cells, 900 possible states per cell, 60fps on mobile. Wrote up the whole process with lessons learned. Links below π #threejs #webgpu
Cherry blossom season is upon us in Vancouver. Want to find the best spots for viewing? Interested in specific species of cherry trees? My treemap has you covered. mountainmath.ca/vantrees

Did NOT imagine anyone going past 1k when I wrote that scoring function π. Pleasantly surprised!

Can't believe it. Someone actually raised 1000 Β°J today! Said they did an olympic distance marathon. The group chat is buzzing!
*prev. record: 700Β°J
base of ficus microcarpa I used as a bonsai, stems wrinkled after root rot months ago
new monstera leaf just about to unfurl
death and life in the apartment:
- Faustie the bonsai: root rot. overwatered them in my burnout era
- Philomena: new leaf. this one has fenestrations!

of course, walked some new paths via Gogomi!

met @joeczepil.bsky.social in-person over coffee and around the lake!
Interesting Jules x Gogomi synergy going on. Someoneβs been taking nightly neighbourhood walks after work (trying a new route each time) to fill her daily Jules gauge AND slowly cover Willingdon Heights!
Today's a good day to get up close with an Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus coronatus). β‘οΈ
find from 2022. was a birthday gift from my friends because 'every time' they invited me for stuff I'd say I was on-call. this was from the time I worked on Azure SQL DB
nice! been following this via the dev streams, really exciting to finally have it out on Switch
yay!
Not posting your voice online out of fear of it being deepfaked by speaker encoding models, calling it the "Ariel Complex"
Glad you like it! Will share more of these journal entries then :)
A close-up photograph of a pair of green rubber boots in a large, muddy puddle. The boots are designed to resemble frogs, featuring yellow and black googly eyes protruding from the toe area of each boot. The murky, brown water of the puddle reaches just above the soles. The reflections of surrounding bare tree branches are visible in the water. In the background, patches of green grass are visible at the edge of the puddle, and the sky is reflected in the calmer areas of the water's surface.
I found a puddle.
Winterβs almost up and Iβd say Jules has been a great little thing. Made me almost glad my HVAC broke (now replaced). Springβs coming and Iβm warming up to the idea of a movement movement (ba-dum-tss!)
Today's day 88 since I deployed Jules, and day 87 of me moving just enough to close my gauge.
The night before Christmas, Joy was leading the board. I was so ready to make a βJoy to the Worldβ pun, but someone said naah and started moving more to take gold. The gc banded together to support Joy, but the runner-up went full Grinch-mode.
Grinch stole Christmas but it made for a good sideshow!
Once we got past 12 ppl I made a group chat and things took off. Trash talk, encouragement, natural rivalries. At one point the group put me on the hot seat. βHow are you the one making this app but never been top 3?β I had to prove a point that day, lol
The coolest part was how different everyone fills their gauge. Someone snowboarding in Calgary, another doing dog walks in Toronto, me occasionally doing my grand walks, this other guy takes over the leaderboard every other Friday from dance nights
Laid everyone out in the spiral, which unintentionally caused people to want to crack the top 10 to get on the centre screen π
I guess Jules is me materialising the activation energy to get moving. The gauge just gives you enough of a reason.
Anyway, told some friends about it and theyβd go like βoooh I want this tooβ. So naturally, I added a social tabβ¦
On my slumpy days where Iβm mostly bedrotting, Iβd get a ping in the evening, see my gauge isnβt full, sigh, nod and then go walk around the block. I always come back feeling better. Still a mystery why itβs so hard to do stuff you know youβll enjoyβ¦
This was surprisingly effective. I put the widget on my home screen and that changed things
