My favourite part of ever travelling during the week is looking at the Business People making sure people around them know they’re doing Business Things.

Stuff like somehow typing louder than the sound of the train itself because This Email Is Important Dammit.

I love my MacBook Pros, but whoever decided to put the camera underneath the point where you put your thumb to lift the lid is a moron.

Absolutely definitely did not spend the evening sorting out repurposing our Sky dish for use in Plex and then adding in some automations to dim the lights etc when starting a movie.

Now can I get it to start making some popcorn?

Laptop, coffee, plants

Internet going down at home is a pain, but I’ve worked in worse places than this new local coffee shop

Accidentally happened on this option the other day and it’s got me out of a pickle, very handy.

It would be funny if it wasn’t so depressing.

What’s the stage after acceptance, where you have to hold yourself back from rewriting everything you’ve ever written in Rust?

I have absolutely no use for this but am stoked that it exists.

The compiler is definitely super helpful, which is great! The whole thing is less daunting as I actually write stuff instead of just in theory. Thanks for the cheerleading, helps get back in there!

Finally committed the first lines of code to my Rust project last night. It’s taking so much mental capacity to get my head around borrowing and ownerships and lifecycles, as well as a more functional approach than I’m used to, but it’s good fun to plod along with.

There’s so much room for imposter syndrome in this game, so it’s only fair to let yourself feel good when you’re feeling good!

Today has been one of the days of all time. Car getting hit in a hospital car park with no note left is definitely a great bit of icing.

FWIW I also managed to get it twice to one of my email addresses (and a once to another email address, which is odd because it’s not twice to both…)

Either way, like I imagine the rest of your audience - no biggy on either thing and an instant signup to The Index.

I have an emergency PAYG sim that I keep around to put in a 5G router if our home network connection goes down.

The provider cancelled it today for lack of use, and then sent a β€œsorry you’re leaving” questionnaire.

I’m not leaving ya plonkers, & I remember the days PAYG sims would last forever πŸ‘¨β€πŸ¦³

I’m really looking forward to getting to the point I’m aiming for with it: rewriting a utility tool that’s used by members of my sim racing team for timing and telemetry. Some of that high level stuff is going to come in really useful, as the existing tool is writing in Python.

Yea, all of the iteration adaptors are very neat. I’m still very much in the β€œreading the book” phase and, having spent no time in systems level languages, I’m in over my head a bit. But little bits like these adaptors help me think that yes this is a language I’d like to keep learning.

- they’re watching too much YouTube

The initial file location isn’t a hardlink though, is it? I think we’re deep into semantics though, and I value you and your thoughts, so either way thanks for making me dig into knowledge I might not be super clear on.

Is that really the case on NTFS?

I’m very up for learning something new, but my understanding is that for a file to exist in multiple folders in NTFS the file would have to exist multiple times on disk, or it would live in one location and appear elsewhere with symlinks. Just one parent per file.

31.01.2025 10:28 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I’m not saying it’s the right way, or that having a number for the combined size of files under a given parent wouldn’t be useful, but just context that helped me get past the same frustration.
