I know it's a silly jokey joke, but people REALLY need to stop anthropomorphizing their boyfriends. "My boyfriend told me" your boyfriend didn't "tell" you anything. "My boyfriend thinks..." your boyfriend can't actually think or feel; just output a convincing simulation of it based on probability πŸ™„

which I don't know how it became French but folketymologizing things isn't a science I think

Think that my friend was trying to tease me w/ the clusters and did the [χstχ] but from my experience it's either oe[χsχ]eest or oe[s(t)χ]eest yeah

The second pronunciation made me think that I folketymologized it as sth like "ghost of the west" or sth

Actually there are some Dutch things where I can't fathom as clusters, and I think the orthography is trolling me, like thuis and 's-Hertogenbosch.

is the /Ι¦/ ever pronounced in these clusters?

Oegstgeest [uΟ‡stΟ‡eΙͺst]
and I wonder how Flemish people would pronounce that

You who bark when the gloomy shades of evening fall, Who gulp the sour ayran as it is poured, Who terrify the night-prowling thieves, Putting them to flight with your uproar, Have you news of my encampment? Tell me, And so long as my dark head is in life and health I shall treat you kindly, dog.

oh nevermind I actually like that wtf

13.03.2026 18:50 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Also one fun thing about Indonesian loans is that they sometimes don't abide by headedness, like bushalte, poskantor, wastafel.

But it seems like when the compounds have separable elements in other places people just nativize them bc "halte bus" exists but not "tafel was"

oh wait no "se-how"

I'm a bit stupid

13.03.2026 18:44 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

You can say "segimana mungkin" (lit. se-why possible) as in "even to the best effort" e.g. "segimana mungkin dia coba, dia gak bisa berhasil" (even to his best effort of trying, he can't succeed)

13.03.2026 18:42 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Oh there's a funny thing in Indonesian where we calqued "zo snel/zo veel mogelijk" as "secepat/sebanyak mungkin" and that triggered weird grammaticalization of "se-X mungkin" like "as X as possible"

Unlike Dutch it's weird how verbs can also be put into the frame. WH- words are also allowed, as inβ€”
