My path was odd, because although I was raised Baptist, I never took it seriously (though adult me did have to work through some weird/puritanical attitudes towards sexuality). I remember being 12 and thinking that if Sunday school didn't have donuts and hot cocoa, I would've found a way to not go.
I think part of the problem here is that it's really easy to twist the idea that the rich need to pay their fair share into only the rich should be paying. I think I should pay taxes, but I do also think that people who have more should pay more.
