I keep pointing to this important treatise that people need to read if they want to understand our current moment and how to deal with Trump. This is the real “Art of the Deal.”

I understand the political theory behind this - “look, we’re on your side re: affordable gas” - I just think it’s a stupid fucking theory

let them touch the stove, press their hand on it good and hard

this is also my ongoing frustration. you can not run for office on "democracy is under threat" and then lose and go "oh well, nice game everyone"

they put us in a constant state of hypervigilance & terror begging for our last $5 to save the country and then they do the joint softball game.

they didn’t even think they had to sell it and if that isn’t a scathing condemnation of our media I don’t know what is

I think this might be on to something, and I suspect it lurks behind Labour’s current rhetoric of “tough choices.” A leader is the one who’s willing to hurt others for the greater good. So if you’re not hurting someone… you’re not a leader?

So that’s that, right? We don’t have to put up with endless drivel about how expensive it is to save the planet abd ourselves ever again? Cool.

I don't want to do a whole long rant on this, so I'll just say: the reason fossil fuels & other aligned incumbents don't want to transition to clean energy is that it will *damage their material interests*. And folks, they understand their own material interests. Really well!

The US's higher ed system is far from perfect, but if you care about living in a halfway decent and just society, you're sure gonna miss it when it's gone. And if the GOP has its way, it could be largely decimated within a decade or so.

the discourses on here about what public health workers should or should not do is pretty disconnected from the evidence base, expert consensus, and broader reality of that work. and most current PH workers have been driven off social media due to harassment, censorship, or just being way too busy

Plane tickets. Which I’m not sure it will be safe to use by July.

The public health field has bent over backwards to assuage the ‘concerns’ of anti-vaxxers for almost 3 decades now. It’s not working.

The way forward is stigmatizing these child-killing freaks and mandating that every kid gets a jab. Expand access, sure but that’s not going to move the needle.

I live in the state of California, he's my governor, I voted for him in 2018, and he's the worst piece of trash imaginable.

He hates the trans community, he's criminalized being homeless in a state where hardworking people are one missed paycheck from the street. He had Bannon on his podcast

If gender were the immutable biological reality they claim to believe it is, they wouldn't need to spend so much energy policing it like this.

It's so bad that we've reached a point where members of Congress casually discuss stripping citizenship from and deporting people because they don't like their views.

Long-time buddies Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were out for a pleasant van drive in Oklahoma when, all of a sudden, their lives would change.

I have blocked it out in my diary and invited my family (read: informed them they’ll be watching with me).

This & it goes double for “craft fairs”, special events at your bar, pop up community stuff etc.

The thing I miss most about work from home is getting to take a quick nap after lunch.

I still manage tea & a biscuit in the afternoon at the office.

YES. In the same sentence he said the war was complete, he proposed a policy that would vastly enlarge the war! Media reported the first half, and then later reported a different part to make it seem like a change! But it was incoherent, nonsensical slop all along.

This, too, is sanewashing!

Historian of French Revolution here to say that in periods like this, squeamish compromisers do as much to drive radicalization as do ideologues. If you keep making excuses for the unfit king, eventually folks come for you and him.

This is so clownish. You want a bare minimum coffee and a minimal line? Then why are you going to the place that specializes in making people special little treats and has built its entire business model on fulfilling detailed requests?

This is like saying it's rude to build a bear at Build-a-Bear.

I say this every year, but:

The uni students I'm teaching are thoughtful, intelligent, will make everything they encounter better.

With a new addition for 2026:

They deeply hate AI.

I don't want to be dramatic, but there is a sucking suspicion of having your life wasted. Not your personal life, but the opportunity to live in a better world that you were willing to work to achieve.

I was in my 40s before I realised that 1. “A wife must have her own money” was so ingrained a value in my family no one had bothered to say it out loud and 2. the reason generations of us were well-trained in music from a young age was to make sure we always had a trade.

Let me tell you something. Y’all are asking too many damn questions at every point of sale. I have to leave a comment, make a suggestion, donate to a charity, choose a method of payment three times and then multiple choice of ways to get a receipt.

Take the damn money and leave me alone.

This plus if your city had functional public transportation, you might not have to drive to the places everyone is going.

Sure you might still take the minivan to do a Costco run, but if you have a train or even a regular bus that you should have to take it to see a ballgame or a movie.

By now there’s enough independent, third-party data analysis of AI’s impact (or apparent lack thereof) on the current job market that there’s no reason not to include some skepticism about the executive claim when you write it up.

I have a vocation-type job and I am way better at it because I have enough support at work to limit it to a reasonable number of hours and it pays enough to not have to worry about a whole bunch of stuff that used to get in the way of me doing my job.
