This thread details pretty much exactly what you'd expect a Trump/Hegseth war would be.
you know? what a funny world. what would things look like if children were truly treated as unsexed individuals with their own autonomy and support against any kind of coercion from adults to fit into heterosexualism or cisness. just their decisions over themselves

When someone says βScientists do not want you to knowβ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They canβt shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
There were 19 reported covid related deaths last week and a big uptick in hospitalizations. We're in a wave.
We haven't been hearing much about it, so I'm pleased to see this article on Stuff.
I feared this would be the case. Too much haste to "ban" access to things that make parents' tummies go icky without thinking through the consequences.
False information spreads quicky at times like this, check for quality sources before sharing, and remember that people are more likely to believe false information if it aligns with their existing worldview- you are not immune to propaganda
I've always passed on hockey AU even though there are so many. I'm a NZer, I have zero context for it and had no desire to be indoctrinated.
Until the last 2 months, wherein I've been forced to increase my hockey knowledge from zero to 7000%-more-than-will-ever-be-practically-useful
The first act of violence that patriarchy demands .. of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves.

Literally, at work this morning:
Clinician: Patient should stop medication A, but must keep taking medication B.
AI VR transcription of this: Patient should stop taking medication B.
Seriously NEVER LET A DOCTOR USE AI FOR YOUR APPOINTMENTS. NEVER. UNDER ANY FUCKING CIRCUMSTANCES.
Could not put it better myself. NZ politicians considering the proposed ban on under-16s accessing social media need to understand that supporting it is a vote to create digital ID and support speech-suppressing surveillance.

This is a mental war that we have to win. It's not about being a luddite, it's about destroying or retaining the ability to think. It's about how insidious this becomes in a situation where generative AI is adopted and then subverted intentionally.

if only there couldβve been a way for them to have learned this a year before the election. like the voters and youth organizing groups who said that would happen without a change in Gaza policy back in November 2023
from reddit r/ExperiencedDevs β’ 21h ago Tech-Cowboy An AI CEO finally said something honest (Meta Dax Raad from anoma.ly might be the only CEO speaking honestly about Al right now. His most recent take: "everyone's talking about their teams like they were at the peak of efficiency and bottlenecked by ability to produce code here's what things actually look like - your org rarely has good ideas. ideas being expensive to implement was actually helping - majority of workers have no reason to be super motivated, they want to do their 9-5 and get back to their life - they're not using Al to be 10x more effective they're using it to churn out their tasks with less energy spend - the 2 people on your team that actually tried are now flattened by the slop code everyone is producing, they will quit soon - even when you produce work faster you're still bottlenecked by bureaucracy and the dozen other realities of shipping something real - your CFO is like what do you mean each engineer now costs $2000 extra per month in LLM bills"
someone in AI fucked up and actually told the truth

Since I didnβt see it get much airtime on Bluesky AI channels, I found the resignation letter of Mrinank Sharma, a former AI safety researcher at Anthropic, to be very powerful when one reads between the lines.
This was the individual who led the study on how Claude use changes peopleβs minds.
Given the use of GenAI among political parties and all that entails, your periodic reminder that we have an Open Letter signed by over 20 AI experts calling on AI regulation. So far only the Green Party has committed to this. Please share among your networks and sign if you haven't already #nzpol
This is bathrobe girl.
She is outside in the frigid AF midwestern winter sporting nothing but a comfy robe, fuzzy slippers and a thirst for justice.
Be like bathrobe girl.
Even more reasons why LPG imports are strategically stupid:
"As South Australia gets close to its goal of running purely on solar and wind energy, its electricity prices have dropped by a third in a year and are now the lowest in Australia."

Nothing winds me up more than Luxon and assorted other suits saying we need to be wealthier before we can afford doctors, nurses, water we can swim in etc. Meanwhile wealthier kiwi households have stacked up huge piles of savings (cash, shares, equity etc). The economy works for the few. [𧡠1/n]
The really important para in this article?
"best performer was Kernel's S&P Global Clean Energy Fund, up 59.9 percent"
Clean. Energy.
Excellent article from Andrea Vance today - few quotes
"There is a weak argument (usually put forward by white men, those least likely to suffer abuse online) that staying on X somehow moderates the awful. You canβt dilute a cesspool."

Heavyweight is always great, but this view into my hometown is especially well-done. This one captures it.
A new study from Anthropic finds that gains in coding efficiency when relying on AI assistance did did not meet statistical significance; AI use noticeably degraded programmersβ understanding of what they were doing. Incredible.
