Clockwise, from top left: Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. None of the worlds is to scale, but all are imaged with JWST's near-infrared (NIRCam) instrument.
The giant planets of the Solar System, by JWST.
The Apollo CSM with white paint.
Skylab Apollo CSM. For Skylab, the Apollo CSM went through a number of changes. The most obvious change was the use of white thermal control paint on the side of the spacecraft that would face the sun while docked to the station.
A solitary figure in white robes stands beneath a streetlight on an eroding cone of earth. In her hands she cradles the spiral of an ammonite fossil as she stares up at the yellow light. There is barely any platform left to stand on as the peak descends in thin winding ridges, bare rock at the peak but mossy and green at the base of the eroded mountain. A heart on a chain dangles off the edge. The sky beyond billows in violent potential with the horizon painted a gradient of pale to vibrant orange. Land parts to sea in fractal-like tendrils, receding to black water except where it glistens green from light filtering through the storm front's edge.

The fourth of my End of Nature paintings. The figure is stranded on a pillar of human folly, looking up to a symbol of technologyβthe lamppostβfor her deliverance from the perils signaled by the oncoming storm. 1/2

Sonselasuchus was one of several species of Shuvosaurid pseudosuchians that lived during the Late Triassic. This small animal was part of a large radiation of crocodile relatives that went onto many niches that will be eventually occupied by dinosaurs later in the Jurassic
(4/4) An interesting way to view this simulated image is to view it in darkness (turn off all lights) several meters away from the computer monitor. Also put a hand close to one eye and use it to create a 'cylinder'. This can be remarkably similar to viewing Jupiter with an astronomical telescope.
(3/4) Examples of these various factors include Jupiter's angular size, how dark adapted the eye is and whether Jupiter is totally surrounded by black space or if there is some object in the foreground.
(2/4) And this image is a preliminary gamma corrected version intended to simulate Jupiter's appearance through an astronomical telescope. It should be noted that this is highly subjective because how Jupiter would appear to the human visual system at fairly close range depends on various factors.
(1/4) Jupiter test renders from Voyager 2 data. The left one is from a map I made years ago. The right one is from a new map I'm working on from the same data. The color is better and will be even better in the final version. But the biggest change is that the new map is geometrically more accurate.
Here is a stunning video of the Ariane 6 launch on March 6, 2025 at Kourou, French Guiana, by the pilot of one of the three Dassault Rafale fighter jets patrolling the launch area and showing off their flying and photography skills.

A digital illustration of Ichthyosaurs anningae, a prehistoric marine reptile, similar in size and shape to modern day dolphins.
Marking #InternationalWomenDay2026 by reposting my illustration of Ichthyosaurs anningae, named for the truly remarkable and groundbreaking Mary Anning.

Low saturation drawing of a barn owl. The owl is looking to the right, and has a petals from a decaying sunflower around the back of it's head. The background of the image is dark.
A watercolour painting I did of a path winding off into the distance. The light is that of a hazy winter afternoon. Either sides of the path on the horizon are what looks like hills that form a valley, the sky colour on the right is a warm yellow sky as the sun dips behind the hill. The light is hazy, and suggests the time of day is in the afternoon, the sky colour on the left still has hints of blue. This is watercolour, then touched up with acrylic.
Gouache & water-soluble graphite on toned paper. This is a landscape painting I did of a wintery moor land. The hills are white with snow, and the sky is stormy and wintery. The saturation is quite low, the sky is blue grey.
Pencil drawing on moleskine of a cute seal, hints of snow falling in the background.

Cover of "Picture an Astronomer: Best Practices for Retaining Talent in Astrophysics", which features an illustration of a 19-year-old Vera Rubin looking through a telescope over a backdrop of a first light image of spiral galaxies from the Rubin Observatory.
Happy International Women's Day!
Perfect time for me to (re)share our white paper on increasing the retention of women in professional astrophysics (really full of suggestions that broaden participation in academic science in general).

James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveals Herbig-Haro 49/50βa dramatic protostellar jet from a forming star, with intricate gas and dust structures in near- and mid-infrared light. A chance alignment with a distant spiral galaxy adds a stunning cosmic backdrop. The color palette highlights different wavelengths of light, from near-infrared (NIRCam) to mid-infrared (MIRI). Felt like drawing an Aegirocassis, accidentally drew a bunch of other stuff too.

A leafless tree is pictured below a starry sky. In the sky behind the tree is an aurora glowing mostly green but with some purple. The shape of the aurora seems to follow the branches of the tree. Please see the explanation for more detailed information.
