Happening tomorrow from 10 AM to 4:30 PM:
#OTD in 1945, the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, the agreement that formalized the surrender of Japan, was signed by Allied powers and Japan on the deck of USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. It marked the end of hostilities in World War II.
This photo depicts one of the more controversial signings.
Today is International Dog Day! Here are some photos from the Second World War of Hussars with their dogs!

Daimler Dingo scout car abandoned at Dieppe, 1942.
"The shale stones at Dieppe, some the size of a small fist, offer an unsettling sound as they rub against each other. Footing is poor and the rocks move with pressure. The memory of Dieppe is like those stones, layered upon each other, shifting unsteadily, and disquieting." - Tim Cook.
Map from Project '44 showing the military situation in Normandy on 16 August 1944 with 1H War Diary excerpt. Red = Canadian (and Polish soldiers under command of the 1st Canadian Army), Beige = British, Dark Blue = American, Light Blue = French, Black = German.

#OTD in 1944, the Regiment could hardly field a complete squadron, let alone the three (plus RHQ) it was supposed to be fielding, mostly due to equipment losses from being constantly called forward for offensives to help close the Falaise Pocket.
Good news - they must have received a new shipment of badminton birdies as many sets of badminton were played #OTD in 1945... also Japan announced its surrender. #VJDay
Maj-Gen. Frank Worthington, RCAC, at his desk, smoking a pipe.
Marteinson, John and Michael R. McNorgan, "The Royal Canadian Armoured Corps: An Illustrated History." Page 81.
#OTD in 1940, the RCAC was formed through the efforts of Frank Worthington, who claimed he fought alongside Pancho Villa and had many adventures across Central America. Maybe it's true, maybe not, but one thing's for sure: he had a major impact on Canada and he used a certain synonym for mistake.

A postal stamp commemorating Chloe Cooley, a slave owned by Upper Canada loyalist Adam Vrooman, who beat her and tied her up when he resold her to slaveholders in the US in 1793. This abuse was witnessed by two bystanders who reported it to the Executive Council of Upper Canada.
Portrait of Lt-Gov. Simcoe. He was outraged when he heard of the abuse experienced by Chloe Cooley. In an address to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada, Simcoe said, "The principles of the British Constitution do not admit of that slavery which Christianity condemns. The moment I assume the Government of Upper Canada under no modification will I assent to a law that discriminates by dishonest policy between natives of Africa, America, or Europe." On 9 July 1793, Simcoe gave Royal Assent to the Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada, preventing further slaves from being brought to Upper Canada and bringing about gradual emancipation of the slaves already in the province.
The 1st Hussars Museum will be open for Civic Holiday/Simcoe Day (August 4th) from 1 PM to 4 PM. Did you know that under Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe, Upper Canada became the first jurisdiction in the British Empire to pass a law freeing slaves? Click each image to learn more.

#OTD in 1944, the 1st Hussars participated in Operation Goodwood, which saw the British and Canadians cross the Orne river into the eastern half of Caen. It didn't result in the promised breakthrough to Falaise, but the 3rd Cdn Inf Div saw their highest haul of POWs since D-Day.
