Addendum: I'm not complaining! I started a newsletter years and years ago and I'm doing okay (it's my side thing). But growth has definitely stagnated and while that is probably somewhat of a reflection on my abilities, the massive influx of Substacks no doubt plays a big role.

It's also an incredibly saturated space because so many laid off journalists are trying to start paid newsletters to make rent. If you're not a brand name or subsidized by a VC or platform, real growth is almost impossible. I know from experience!
