Here's the NIH's proposed budget - from $48 billion to $27 billion. NIAID, current ~$7 billion cut to ~$4.2 billion.
The proposed 15% cap on indirect costs remains.
Again, these budgets are passed, and our leadership in science, technology, and innovation is gone.

FDA to cut Covid booster access, excluding in-home carers
By restricting vaccinations, "the FDA creates a dangerous public health gap."
Caregivers to disabled people and aging adults (who do not have certain health conditions) will not be able to get the Covid booster in the future under new rules, putting people they care for at risk. New from me at @motherjones.com

NIH terminates $13 million grant on dementia
A $12.9 million grant for a study on dementia risks among at-risk U.S. populations was terminated by the National Institutes of Health.
NIH cancels grant to re-interview Black & lower-income white Americans from Nat'l Survey of American Life (NSAL), to study factors contributing to higher risk of Alzheimer’s dis. & related dementias in these pops.
NSAL the only nat'lly representative sample of the mental hlth of Black Americans. 🛟

Fentanyl is a safe and effective medication when used as prescribed by a medical professional and it is a vital medication for many disabled and chronically ill Americans

Missed this story last night portending something bad for AHRQ
AHRQ fills a hugely important void in the medical and health care research space: it funds work that doesn't map cleanly to a disease, body part, or special population (e.g., older Americans)

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

Interesting read and a reminder why we should preferably publish in society journals. Now the large publishers make huge profits on our publicly funded scientific work. Profits that could also go back to the scientific society (and not shareholders).

I don’t think that would even be helpful. The info on other support is what it is - you can’t really fudge the name of a grant. I guess if you had enough pubs you might be able to massage a biosketch but you can’t really change the titles of pubs and/or still make sense of contributions to science

Many academics admit that the number of nonfaculty staff has grown to uncomfortable levels. A recent report showed that Stanford has roughly one administrator for every student—an unflattering statistic that calls into question higher ed’s priorities. But administrators have proliferated in part because of government requirements that won’t disappear with a funding cap. Universities receiving grants, for instance, must comply with important but costly regulations to protect the safety of human subjects as well as data privacy.
On the other side of the balance sheet, cutting university funding affects more than academics. Research institutions can be local economic engines, creating jobs and driving innovation. The University of Alabama, the state’s largest employer, received $334 million in NIH funds in 2024 alone. Capping indirect costs at 15% would cost it around $70 million a year, shrinking its economic footprint.
A professor of public policy ought to know that Stanford has so many "administrators" because research staff FUNDED BY NIH are included in the definition. We went through this discussion several years ago. www.wsj.com/opinion/high...

Undergraduate research opportunities are incredibly valuable, both for the students and for the progress of the work. And having undergraduate research experience is a massive help for grad school admission. REU cancellations harm students’ preparedness & career prospects, and slow research progress

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter.

It goes without saying, but if you see the need to access any data about American education from the federal government, you should go download it now. Like stop reading this post and do it immediately.
