Bright red-orange-yellow swirl of nebulous clouds surrounding a cone-shaped dark shadow pointing upwards, surrounded by blue and orange stars, fading to a pale green-blue background at the edges of the frame.

The Cone Nebula (NGC 2264), in false (dynamic narrowband) color -- from my backyard. 11" reflecting telescope, 19hrs total exposure. 2700 light-years away, about 7 lights years tall.

A bright space nebula shaped like the shell of a crab dominating the center, surrounded by many stars on the black background. The nebula is an intricate spidery web of pale pink, magenta, and blue, over a white cloudy shape of the crab shell.

The Crab Nebula (Messier 1), in natural color. From a supernova ~1000 yrs ago -- now from my backyard a year ago, just processed this year. 11" reflecting telescope, 2hr exposure.

Astrophotograph. Very large bright gold oval spiral of distant stars in the center. Faintly blue arms at the extremities, flecked with red-magenta hydrogen clouds. Background is black, speckled with multicolored stars. Two small white ovals are superimposed, the smaller being the M32 satellite galaxy and the larger the M110 satellite galaxy.

Another out-of-this-world bauble from this year's backyard galaxy photos: the Sunflower Galaxy, M63 in Canes Venatici (just "under" the Big Dipper). The archetypal "flocculent" (flaky) type. The small bits echo seeds in a sunflower head.
