It's the middle of the night in Chicago. Reporters and electeds are trying to figure out why a US citizen was detained by CBP, why her phone was inside an ICE detention center tonight, and where she is now.
Also unclear what happened to the other five people she was detained with at O'Hare airport.
What a band! So glad i was around to see them in their second act. Rest up, Justin! Looking forward to the new tunes. www.loudersound.com/music/godfle...
Yes in this particular moment the blame is 99.9% on Republicans. A dozen R’s in Congress could together end this presidency now

It reminds me of how I laughed out loud any time his female characters spoke on ‘Yellowstone.’ I’m sure he has spoken to women before, but apparently he never listened.
This seems to be a common reply to my thread, so I'll address it here. Basically, the argument is who cares if this is a misleading attack on Newsom, he's bad so if it hurts him it's fine.
And I think it's important to push back on misinformation so that when there are legitimate criticisms...
STOP THE SAVE ACT (Updated)
My new piece is up with lots of info about the SAVE America Act - the version of the SAVE Act that passed the House and is before the Senate this week. This is a MUST READ and then ACT.

NEW — An obscure Navy contractor program is making Trump’s plans to quickly build out and supply immigrant concentration camps around the country a reality.
Here I explain WEXMAC TITUS, an acronym you need to understand:
A good friend was in their mid-30s when they were diagnosed. 6-7 years later they are still battling for their life. How much easier could their struggle have been if it were caught even a few months sooner?
The billionaire Moroun family, which owns the rival Ambassador Bridge, has spent years and millions of dollars fighting the new U.S.-Canada crossing.
Admin subpoenas are back in the spotlight. Worth remembering ICEs use of a similar tool: hundreds of thousands of warrantless “customs summonses,” often for non-customs cases sent for info about journalists, students, and abortion clinics, with no oversight.

Hoo boy, First Amendment watch: The North Dakota Attorney General sent a cease-and-desist letter to an abortion fund for simply linking to @plancpills.bsky.social. AG claims the link constitutes promoting and facilitating access to medicine without a prescription under the state’s consumer fraud law
SNAP now has work requirements for people 55 to 64. But because of the axing of a USDA food insecurity survey, we may not have comprehensive data of the effects of this barbaric change. My latest for @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/food/2026/01...
On Friday, January 9, ICE arrested a member of our union, the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild, as part of Operation Metro Surge.
He has been transferred to a detention facility in Texas, where he is awaiting action on his petition for habeas corpus.

The Government asked this Court to stay the District Court's order. After the response and reply were filed, JUSTICE BARRETT referred the application to the Court. We directed the parties to file supplemental letter briefs on an issue that the District Court had addressed but the parties' initial briefs had not: the meaning of the term "regular forces" in §12406(3). In its supplemental brief, the Government argues that the term refers to civilian law enforcement officers, such as those employed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement or the Federal Protective Service. Respondents, echoing the District Court, maintain that the term refers to the regular forces of the United States mili-tary. We conclude that the term "regular forces" in §12406(3) likely refers to the regular forces of the United States mili-tary. This interpretation means that to call the Guard into active federal service under §12406(3), the President must be "unable" with the regular military "to execute the laws of the United States." Because the statute requires an assessment of the military's ability to execute the laws, it likely applies only where the military could legally execute the laws. Such circumstances are exceptional: Under the Posse Comitatus Act, the military is prohibited from "execut[ing] the laws" "except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress." 18 U. S. C. §1385. So before the President can federalize the Guard under §12406(3), he likely must have statutory or constitutional authority to execute the laws with the regular military and must be "unable" with those forces to perform that function.
NEW: By a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court blocks Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Chicago to assist immigration agents. A majority holds that he likely lacks authority to do so. Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...
They couldn’t figure this out, say, a decade ago?
There is a tremendous opportunity for a brand new generation of media outlets to rise up right now because many news outlets that spent decades painstakingly building their credibility are seeing it torched by bootlickers with incredible speed.

Imagining Fred and Toody rolling up to a gig in such style makes me love them even more.
Trump can be the rock-bottom of our vicious decline, but only if we start focusing on what we want the future to look like rather than what it is that we don’t want.
We deserve better than this, but we have to decide what better is and fight for it.
