I was delighted to open the iconic Caspar David Friedrich exhibition at New York’s Met! It puts a great German Romantic painter on the map in the US, and a fascinating period of intellectual explosion in our history. A testament to the exceptional cooperation between our museums – and our countries.

Not far from where I live a plane bound for Reagan National Airport collided with a helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River. What a terrible tragedy. My thoughts are with the families and loved ones who are experiencing loss during this terrible tragedy.
Attended a moving concert of the Radio Symphony Orchestra RSB at the Berlin Philharmonic today. They played a special program on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance day. It was aired live by DLF Kultur & I introduced the event.
Today marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. For Germans, the remembrance of the Holocaust and fight against antisemitism is of unique significance.
Today, we also think of the Israeli hostages still in the hands of Hamas, among them many Germans. They need to be released.
The Diplomatic Corps has arrived at the Capitol. 60th Inauguration Ceremony to start soon. Exciting to be able to witness this event. For me it is a first.
I am shocked and saddened by the horrific events in #NewOrleans. My deepest condolences to the victims and their loved ones. Germany just suffered an attack on a Christmas market. We stand united with the U.S. in condemning such acts of violence.
