Those 2 festivals in particular are celebrated by ethnic groups across 2 diasporas, so it looks different in their respective region. In the US you find your kin and together build your version of LNY and Carnival bc there are smaller groups on this land
But that’s my point. It’s all LNY, it belongs to all of them bc of colonization and wars. The way LNY & Carnival in the US has had to adapt bc of generations born here. The goal is always to ensure the culture doesn’t die even if it has to evolve and it should evolve.
😭😭😭😭
That’s wild there is constant competition in your house after breakfast.
Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like you wouldn’t say that about Asian people celebrating Lunar New Year
And that’s appreciated. That’s truthfully the heart of all this. Language usage can be the difference btwn people understanding each other.
I can’t believe gas went up 30¢ since yesterday.
However, the anthropologist in feels a responsibility to help you understand why using terms like LARPing or cosplay for cultural customs is extremely problematic. As well as the incorrect verbiage.
The Caribbean Latina in me definitely feels some type of way. And that you’re so set in seeing it from your perspective that you’re not understanding how it is disrespectful to someone culture. It’s akin to me diminishing the importance of Juneteenth and its significance bc of bbq invites.
Each island did not expand on what Trinidad did. Each island establish their own version of Carnival based on the intersection of African, European, Indigenous influences dependent upon when they were colonized. These carnival celebrations are over 100+ yrs old.
Think about it, how else did one ceremony manage to be celebrated in the islands and Central and South America. Carnival, come from the Lenten carnival (festival) from the Catholic Church, the people who colonized all of the Americas.
So this is inaccurate. The European influences are there, it’s built into the ceremony itself. The festival itself has its roots in Venice and the Catholic Church. So it never loses its European culture. The rest of it comes from Indigenous groups & Africans.
It’s not. You can partake in something but that doesn’t mean it has the same meaning for you that it has for me. I do feel like you minimized our culture, by saying it’s LARPing. Bc that’s not what it is. There is a meaning, history and bond. And you’re continuing to double down.
The issue is that men aren't having a unique experience.
Women experience their mothers being their first bullies, too.
We don't turn around and become violent misogynists over it, and often, we manage to have loving relationships with other women despite our upbringing.
I wish my mother would send me my other Yeti cup. My current one is too petite.
I do not want to buy a third.
They don’t view women as people.
When i said abolish judicial immunity that is not what I meant at all.

I love this. My bestie has been going annually and now she’s trying to force that on everyone 🫠
To fully understand "Sinners" and the world of the Smokestack twins, we need to explore the Rust Belt Gothik, the tradition of Black speculative survival strategies forged in response to the pressures of the Great Migration
We gotta leave some of our sisters behind, Tara is one of them.
😭😭😭
Now if it reverses…
I don’t like when yall use AI slop as gifs and reaction pics either. Yall think bc you didn’t ask AI to make it, it doesn’t mean anything. It does.
