"Alberta ICE" is here.

This week on ‘Whatever This Is’, the UCP is spending $156 million to copy-paste an American nightmare: ICE.

Expanded powers. Anonymous tips. Zero independent accountability.

It’s a tactic ripped straight from the US playbook.

Comparison street view images of Sunview Street in 2009 and 2025. 2009 shows a pretty conventional suburban street with 1950s era bungalows. 2025 shows some of the same bungalows, but now there's a bunch of urban mid-rise apartment buildings around too.

I'm a broken record about how remarkable the transformation in Waterloo's Northdale neighbourhood is. If we could figure out a repeatable formula for mid-rise upzoning for low-car streets, we could achieve amazing things

There was a page that tracked all of the police dogs who were either shot by the police, or who died of heat exhaustion in police cars.
I can't find it now, but it was a miserable read.

If you are wondering how upzoning in Edmonton is going; when I moved into my place last year it was $1300 for a 1 bed. Now my landlord is offering a slightly larger unit for $1200. Its crazy! If I wasn't moving cities I'd be down there renegotiating my lease as we speak @growtogetheryeg.bsky.social

Yegbike Stopped by the 102 ave LRT construction consultation today. More of a “this is what we are going to do” than a consultation but they got my feedback anyway. Looks like zero chance of extending the 103 ave bike lanes to Churchill square but the argument was weak - intersections are too busy.

"Inaccurate data": How Recovery Alberta officials facilitated consumption site closures (Pt 2) Selective data sharing by some of Alberta's top health officials may backstop plausible deniability for government negligence in closing sites – with impacts all the way to Ontario.

So CoRE published a 'study' using data collected at supervised consumption sites.

The main problem? As I showed in those two stories from February, dead people were somehow presenting their personal health numbers at consumption sites.

The data are worthless. 3/

In February of 2022 Canadian women reached the highest rates of employment ever recorded.

Now, in 2026, Canadian policymakers are increasingly in agreement the following need to be removed:

$10-a-day daycare
Remote work
EDI programs

No coincidence here.

...we're at the point of the year when our snowdepth starts dropping.
And we saw that on the weekend with the local stations plunging 10cm or more.
The airport is down to 12cm, while Blatchford is still up at 36cm.
We often get to 0cm around the end of the month.

March 9th is the first day of the year when Edmonton's average High is above-freezing. #yegwx #yeg
The average Low is still around -10°C, and it won't be above-freezing until April 19th.
So this week might feel a little chilly, but it's not too unusual.
