Response rates is something EMA all researchers worry about. Insightful blog about how to predict and improve your response rates!

Super easy way to personalize sliders with a tangible effect!
How to make good quality EMA items? A small investment to read, a big return by higher quality data!
Very cool study by Laura Dewitte on how the #ESM / #EMA methodology can even be used in a population with dementia. Results:
β
0 dropouts
β
80% response rate
β
low reported burden
β
positive participation experiences
β
substantial within- and between-person variability
π€ Can people with dementia participate in intensive experience sampling studies via smartphone?
π§Yes, they can! Even with high-frequency sampling schemes (8 times / day)!

π± Want to know when to schedule your #EMA / #ESM beeps for the highest completion rates?
β° Timing matters: some moments during the day and week are more receptive than others.

Cool work by Vanhasbroeck et al. (2024) relevant for #EMA / #ESM research:
π Moderate to good retest consistency in fast-paced affective measures
π Whether it is VAS, Likert or 2D affect grid: Scale type doesn't seem to affect reliability!

Ultimate respect for dj Alter Egon @dejonckheeregon.bsky.social !
What an insane crowd at the #SAA2025 m-Party (also sublime dance moves)! ππͺ©πΊπΌ
#EMA researchers know how to party! ππ
Very cool! Still processing the talk :D
Really happy that @leonieschorrlepp.bsky.social presented the results of our mixed-methods study uncovering response processes in ESM studies π±.
Take-away: people are very inconsistent in how they come up with their answers. Talking to participants in key! π #SAA2025
Very exciting to see the work from @katiehoemann.bsky.social at #SAA2025! Participants were able to voice record a description of events. Katie clustered these over many different topics. 2 fun ones:
- Complaints about rain (study was in Belgium π
)
- Complaints about the study itself (ESM...)
#SAA2025: Laura Sels talks about daily emotional suppression and differences between males and females.
Hopefully you have enough energy to make it to Egons dj set ;-)
I had a great time discussing my work yesterday at #SAA2025! If you are interested in building sets of variables, then check out the R package @aaronjfisher.bsky.social and I made:

@leonievogelsmeier.bsky.social showing the true complexity of science!
Agree!
@rayyantutunji.bsky.social showing at #SAA2025 that wearable data (EPA) is not enough to predict mental well-being (R2 = 0.01). My bet is more on timing (triggering) surveys compared to leaving out surveys.
Impressed by the commitment to correct validation (not even touching test set until later)!
The things you see when you're at @saa2025leuven.bsky.social! If you're looking for ZI 02.21 and you find yourself in a mini museum, you're heading in the right direction! #SAA2025
Cool #SAA2025 talk from Niels van Hasbrouck about how an extreme response style can have a severe effect on affect dynamics.
Should we push everyone to have the same response style by only allowing discrete answers?
Welcome to Leuven :D!
Triggering questionnaires at the right time will become increasingly important in research!
I am looking forward to see what researchers will build with these features π©βπ¬ π§ͺ π !
Very happy with this new feature that automatically creates individualized invitation pages for all your participants! π«π₯π
Small new #EMI (ecological momentary intervention) feature that makes it very easy to create adaptive module screens or psycho education interventions. Used for:
- adaptive presentation of exercises
- Only show relevant modules for a participant (modules that actually interest the participant)
For those who are interested ESM feedback, happy to announce that a new paper is out, in which we combine qualitative and quantitative feedback! Innovations include clock graphs, stacked graphs, and word clouds with sentences. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Using fixed (e.g. stress>70) thresholds when triggering interventions or questionnaires is not optimal. For example, some participants never reach a stress level of 70, some are always above 70.
This pre-print shows that triggering with personalized thresholds, solving this problem, is possible!
Very cool paper on an ambulatory assessment based blended care implementation! #blended #ESM #EMA
