Here's my latest newsletter! buttondown.com/charliejane/...
I remember learning about the Hays Code in film school and how it made it so that any amoral protagonist had to meet karmic justice by the end of the film and going “wow, that’s really silly” and then once a week I log online and see people argue that we need stuff like that now or it’s problematic
Seems like it takes an average of 12 accusations before cops start investigating, so basically in the US, you get the first 11 rapes free. But obviously the rich get dozens to hundreds before the police, corporations, and politicians stop turning a blind eye and start covering their own asses.
Gonna have a bit more of a rant about the 'there's just so many damn trans women online!' thing.
I think people mistake this for some sort of systemic privilege; that we are being lifted up comparative to our peers because we are more acceptable within the public eye.
This is categorically untrue.
It isn't actually a privillege to have to try and scrape by on the instable proceeds generated through your patreon, gofundme, onlyfans or itch because you have been excluded from the formal economy.
That is something that you have to do because the alternative is to fucking starve.
Just reposted this thread but to expand:
I think people confuse social capital with actual... capital.
Like a lot of people get VERY angry that so many trans women have large followings here and on other sites but:
1) They are not the largest accounts.
2) They are still mostly poor as fuck.
my birthday is next week and we’re extremely close to the multi-purpose fundraising goal to fix my jacked up housing/transportation situation

This is murder with extra steps.
bsky actually might be a vanguard for whatever the next phase of social media is, not in the decentralization sense but in the "we actually never intended for users to use the website and got mad when they did" sense
kinda weak reporting by Wired in terms of bsky "positioning itself as a progressive twitter replacement" since the staff on here have been incredibly clear that that's not what they wanted to do and never wanted to do

And we have a LOT of medications and treatments where a double-blind is inherently unethical (i.e. vaccines, life-critical meds, and many older meds). I’d put HRT in that category.
the weasel word here is “good quality”. you can’t do a double-blind study if the people who get the placebo drop out because they can tell they’re obviously not getting HRT. they rely on obfuscating this
Gavin Newsom confirms he's only going to give the fascists an inch on trans rights, presumes they won't then demand a mile
you dont support trans rights Gavin, there is no magic world where you get to say you support all trans rights except for sports and qualify as a trans ally. if you replace trans with any other marginalized minority you can see how evil this position is. no better than the baseball segregationists.
Also, it should go without saying that the sports bans aren't really about sports. They're about getting "transgender girls are male" written into the text of a law so that the next time someone sues over bathroom access, or passport accuracy, or employment discrimination, there's a statute ...
Look, again, as I've said over and over and over, it would be one thing if the people obsessing over trans people in sports were interested in some sort of compromise. But they're just... not. www.readtpa.com/p/fine-lets-...
Trans women don't owe cis women anything
They aren't our therapists
And we should never value being in community with them on the basis of what we can take from that friendship
But if you are respectful and kind enough to be included in their women's spaces...
It's the best feeling
It's hope
I wish more cis women understood on this #IWD is that so much of our identity is defined by negativity towards our gender and sense of self
And seeing trans women joyfully embrace womanhood and delight in the very things we were taught to hate about ourselves
Is remarkable
Is healing
Is liberation
What do you want to bet this little tantrum on the WaPo's opinion page is because someone ahead of Professor Jakub Grygiel in the queue at some coffee shop had an elaborate coffee order and he hasn't been able to let it go ever since
I think there's a stark difference between messy queer rep and stories that seem to despise our existence or lament that we aren't something else entirely. Wandering Son definitely hit those points for me in the bits I managed to read.
like there was a vile undertone woven throughout the bits I read before I just couldn't stand it anymore. I've read a lot of stuff, much of it not the shiniest or easily handled representation and whatnot, and it is one of the two I would warn people to not read (other being Crossdressing Senpai)
Quoting to talk about this more, I cannot overstate how this manga was recommended fucking EVERYWHERE as a good trans manga and then I dnf'd it because it has an adult trans woman preying on a grade schooler trans boy (who detransitions by the end) and presents the MC as better for being passive
