New paper showing that much of the apparent success of protein language models in predicting mutational effects is a mirage: These models mostly memorize sites. 1/

New paper out in Nature Communications:

We found >250 metabolic enzymes on chromatin.
Only ~20 had been reported before.
This means hundreds of metabolic enzymes may have unexplored nuclear roles.
We are excited to be recruiting a new tenure track group leader in the Structural Studies Division at MRC LMB! It is an amazing place to start your own lab.

I'm thrilled to announce that the manuscript for the Bits to Binders protein design competition is out on bioRxiv! Here's a summary of our findings, including some simple criteria that nearly *double* success rates when applied as a filter π§΅
We have started a project trying to predic the interactions/structures of all yeast protein pairs using an AlphaFold pooling approach. We are making the current dataset open and we welcome collaborations.

With Eugene Koonin, we propose a concept of βthe selfish ribosomeβ, under which evolution of life is viewed as a ribosomal takeover, where the ribosome evolved to consume most of the cellβs resources, while other cellular componentry ensures the propagation of the ribosome. arxiv.org/abs/2602.23268
Predicting protein-protein interactions (PPIs) at proteome scale can take months with co-folding models due to the massive all-vs-all comparisons required.
We are excited to announce FlashPPI, a contrastive learning framework that predicts proteome wide physical interfaces in minutes. 1/π§΅

I'm super excited that our paper was published last month! We find that very short activation domains can control the fraction of transcription factor molecules bound to chromatin. Vinson added some very nice extra experiments in the revised version! elifesciences.org/articles/105...

Our department at Genentech is hiring. We're looking for a freshly-minted PhD (0-3 years) protein biochemist / structural biologist to join as a Sr Scientist. A rare opportunity to join our group leader job family at a more junior level than we usually hire.

Info from a linkedin post.
I can't find the official CAS news, so I guess that it should still be taken with a grain of salt.

I tricked ChatGPT and Google, and made them tell other users Iβm a competitive hot-dog-eating world champion
People are using this trick on a massive scale to make AI tell you lies. Iβll explain how I did it
