(This is mostly about authoritarianism but perhaps the most grim sentence I read this week on AI and war was how it “shortens the kill chain”.)

Political reason is not in the same postcode. Starmer makes me think of @samfr.bsky.social comments about Rishi Sunak - just how is it possible these people, PMs no less, are so bad at politics?
“Labour are clearly flailing…” as @zackpolanski.bsky.social accurately notes. People going to the Greens certainly care about nature - but what people want is progressive social policies that are environmentally sound. It’s not really about beavers, you muppets. (As welcome and as cute as they are…)
OpenSAFELY is open from today! Huge thanks to all who supported this vast collaboration: whole population GP data; in a productive platform; innovative privacy protections; unprecedented support from professions, privacy campaigners; &c
Now it's over to users!

My heart goes out to the staff and students - when courses, esp ones as complex as med/vet clinical courses, become dysfunctional it takes a toll. Got to mention that the RCVS noted improvements in 2025 - not easy. This period must be incredibly difficult for them all.
Anyone with an interest in #meded should read the RCVS Nov 24 report to understand how a med/vet school can go to the wall - two ways, as Hemingway might have said, gradually and then suddenly.
The RCVS details the gradual part.

Been watching this story with interest, from perspective of working in a med school. The FT boils this down to money - and the 995 academics are certainly more concerned about ceding power than vets per se.
But Cambridge let the vet course degrade to the point where accreditation was threatened.
Hmm, that’s a bit harsh on Lidl and people who work on checkouts…
Seeing my research in print is so exciting, and it's featured in the BJGP editorial too! So grateful to all at @wolfsonpallcare.bsky.social
Note the timing of Home Office re-press releasing the “most ever raids” & “hardest ever immigration crack down” today.
Signalling alignment with Trump & ICE.
They haven’t got a clue how to make ordinary British people’s lives better, only how to make migrants suffer. #r4today
How long should it take to retract a paper with incontrovertible signs of data fabrication? Sleuths think 2 months is too long, particularly when clinical risks are involved. deevybee.blogspot.com/2026/01/an-o...

Best quote summarising health visiting:
“With a history in universal child health provision spanning more than 150 years, health visiting is one of the most established and important public health initiatives in the UK, promoting equity from infancy in the community.”
Ah, I knew we had an editorial in the BJGP on health visiting recently - though turns out it was >3 years ago.

Lovely article from David Misselbrook on the “pings and the bongs of regulatory micromanagement and guideline hypertrophy” and the erosion of the patient-doctor relationship.
“For at least the last two decades we have all had a DHSS sponsored buffoon sitting in our consulting rooms.” 🤣
OK I am in. 26 left now 😀
Oh, that’s a nice surprise - my article, featuring the fabulous @deevybee.bsky.social, is included on the list. Thank you to the wonderful editors for all their support 🤩

Currently the framing we use for BJGP reviewers is slightly different: Definitely yes/Probably yes/Probably not/Definitely not. All needs to be interpreted with care - it often surprises me how much the recommendation and the review itself don’t obviously align.
That screenshot looks more like the ScholarOne options for the AEs to make recommendations back to the EiC. (Or the EiC making a decision.) It then means a different email template gets generated - the optimistic/pessimistic framing could be helpful. There is a big range within ‘major revisions’…
In this blog, we explain why we need to have an Extreme Wealth Line, just like the Extreme Poverty Line. Also, having a line as a social indicator does not necessarily commit one to a limit on wealth possession via taxation only; it's a regulative ideal.

Not directly related but adjacent - I get very twitchy when people talk about “building the evidence base”. In itself, innocuous and unarguable - but context is everything and can be a red flag when talking about an intervention that they support (and have already decided works).
At a conference? Why not check the speaker against the Disclosure UK database? They might be paid thousands of pounds from the pharmaceutical industry. I think we can agree transparency is important - but I suspect many (?most) doctors don't know about it.

My thoughts with the good people at @releasedrugs.bsky.social but also, especially, with the people who are being targeted by the far-right.
