From the central atrium of the House of the Faun (VI, 12, 2) in Pompeii, one of three large pieces of a 'Nilotic' mosaic, showing a pinkish-colored hippopotamus, a mongoose and cobra, ducks, ibises, a crocodile, and lotus plants. In other words, a crowded day on the Nile! The incipient fight between the hippo and croc - as top predators on the river - brings the drama. Most of the lotus plants are in bud, and a couple of ducks are eating the blooms. 1st century BCE. Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN inv. 9990 (b))

For #WorldHippoDay, here’s the long side of the Nilotic atrium mosaic from the House of the Faun in #Pompeii. Hippo vs. croc, with lots of ducks, lotus flowers, a mongoose and cobra, plus a couple of swamp hens and ibises. Open it up to see more. Fabulous.

Roman #Monopoly piece? A bronze figurine of #dog found at the #Roman roadside station on the Brandsteig, Aichhalden-Rötenberg, where a votive altar dedicated to Diana Abnoba was found. #Dogs were associated with Diana. The figurine may have been an offering to the goddess.

Here's “Death blowing bubbles,” 18th century. The bubbles symbolize life's fragility. This plaster work appears on the ceiling of Holy Grave Chapel in Michaelsberg Abbey, Bamberg, Germany. After the monastery’s dissolution, it became a hospital.

A gold sword hilt fitting with cloisonné garnet inlay from the Staffordshire Hoard. The hoard was found in 2009 from Hammerwich near Lichfield, originally by metal detectorists. The find consists of almost 4,600 items. They date to c. 7th to 8th centuries AD. #FindsFriday

An bronze horse head with a worn and fractured surface. Despite signs of age, the sculpture retains remarkable detail, particularly in the eyes, nostrils and bridle straps.

This marvellous life-sized #horse head made of gilded bronze belonged to a figural group of a #Roman emperor in a quadriga or a biga (a chariot drawn by four or two horses).
Found in Augsburg, dating 1st/2nd century AD

#FrescoFriday: this spectacular fresco of a winged female figure (either a divinity or allegorical representation) is from Pompeii. I find the depth, form, solidity & colour of this figure reminds me hugely of the Renaissance painter, Masaccio.
