That’s an interesting way to put it, and I definitely agree
I actually quite like it even when it’s overtly noticeable on modern big screen tv’s. Like the colored lighting, it serves to heighten the visual reality and is somewhat unreal. It contributes to the theatrical quality of original Star Trek, which I love. And of course it’s catnip for Spirk fans. :)
Original Star Trek sometimes elicits a few snickers for its use of eyeliner and eye shadow on the male leads but of course most viewers would have been watching the show on small black and white tv’s, and it was not an unusual practice…
Definite Jetsons energy with that little spaceship… I believe the clear dome was reused to house the Providers in Gamesters of Triskelion

Each ends on a moment where Kirk looks toward the viewscreen in quiet awe, but follows it with an upbeat line: “thataway!” and “second star to the right, and straight on til morning.” (The latter from Peter Pan of course). It’s kind of Kirk in a nutshell.
The Motion Picture and The Undiscovered Country could not be more different in tone, aesthetic, and pacing. One has grandeur, the other has grit. One has metaphysical scope, the other is an analogy about geopolitics. Yet they both end on a very similar note! Kirk expresses awe, and then some whimsy…
