“[CDT’s Jain] called the threats against Anthropic ‘another dimension through which American policy is becoming incoherent on AI.’”
“[CDT’s Jain] called the threats against Anthropic ‘another dimension through which American policy is becoming incoherent on AI.’”
CDT’s Jain: “Particularly when you're talking about countries in Africa or countries in Asia, I think China is going to be looking like an increased alternative [for cutting-edge AI]:”
“Since Trump’s reelection, the EU has escalated efforts to grant preference to domestic companies and wean itself off of American tech. [CDT’s] Samir Jain [] said that sentiment is likely to spread as Trump demonstrates a desire to control companies like Anthropic.”
“Frankly, the rule should be simple: If the government would need a warrant to compel the data, it should not be able to buy it instead. But that’s exactly what the government is seeking to do.”
“DHS is essentially inviting the creation of more surveillance-as-a-service business models to come into existence” … “Purchasing all of this info from a commercial intermediary like a data broker really undermines and weakens the Fourth Amendment protections in practice.”
“.... or whether it’s targeting people who have been involved in public dissent against federal immigration enforcement.”
CDT’s Bowman: “It’s not hard to imagine that DHS would want access to these travel records to be able to track all sorts of people, whether it’s people who they’re targeting for immigration related proceedings….”
CDT’s Tom Bowman: “Travel records reveal an enormous amount of info abt private lives—where someone travels, how often they travel, and who they travel with—& expose [] personal info, incl. medical care, family relationships, political activity, or religious practice.”

CDT’s Ruane: “The bills will push online services to use age assurance techniques requiring people to share sensitive information to access content, even though the Constitution guarantees that access.”
CDT’s Kate Ruane in the The Record: “The KIDS Act, Sammy's Law, and App Store Accountability Act all threaten the privacy and free expression of everyone who uses the internet.”
CDT’s Slover: “The creepiest one is the surveillance pricing or the bespoke pricing. But the dynamic pricing […] the algorithmically fed price changes, is also disturbing to people when they hear about it.”
CDT’s Slover: “It’s an issue that people are really getting interested in because the idea is clearly disturbing […] that the price I’m getting is different than the price that somebody else is getting and that maybe I’m having to pay more.”
“Slover told Gizmodo that it seems like it’s almost exclusively Democratic legislators who are currently interested in the topic but there seems to be increased awareness lately that could lead to more widespread action.”
CDT's Slover: "The idea of surveillance pricing is new enough that the terms we used to talk about it haven’t really been settled.”
“George Slover, Senior Counsel for Competition Policy at CDT testified [last] week about the proposed legislation in PA. Slover studies antitrust issues & has a keen interest in algorithmic collusion & what he calls bespoke pricing."

This kind of pricing “tailor-fits” prices to a person’s perceived susceptibility to pay. Like a custom suit, the targeted consumer ends up paying more. As George Slover explained, bespoke pricing is unfair, discriminatory, and turns Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” against consumers.
CDT’s George Slover testified before a joint hearing of the PA Assembly’s House Majority Policy Committee & Senate Democratic Policy Committee on dynamic pricing. He spoke about “bespoke pricing” — using consumers’ personal data profiles to secretly charge them more.
CDT research shows that LGBTQ+ students and their parents oppose these policies. We’ll be watching closely to see how states and ED respond to this litigation.
CDT’s recently published blog examines nationally evolving student privacy policies regarding gender expansive students, and the mounting pressure within the federal government, especially at ED, to require forced outing in K-12 schools.
California’s SAFETY Act, the law protecting gender expansive student privacy & currently the subject of a U.S. Dept of Education FERPA enforcement action, was paused by a Supreme Court ruling this week.
CNBC covers CDT’s coalition letter urging Congress to investigate the Pentagon’s decision to designate Anthropic a supply chain risk — warning the move sets a “dangerous precedent” and could undermine U.S. competitiveness in AI.
In a new op-ed, CDT’s Aliya Bhatia & Michal Luria explain why many families are skeptical of mandates like selfie-based age checks & platform restrictions. Parents & teens say they want flexible tools & stronger privacy protections.
In a new letter, we raise concerns about bills like KOSA, the Safe Messaging for Kids Act, Sammy’ Law, & the App Store Accountability Act. These proposals could expand access to children’s data, create security risks, & chill the use of essential online communications services.
