Also some of the Core Memories i will take with me until the day i die are from the four day field lab we took to the Outback in Australian Vertebrate Fauna, where I was able to watch sunset across a horizon as wide as creation, and spotlight for spiders scattered like opals around our feet
because it had me analyze works i actually cared about.
Themes of gender and power as exored in Austin or Anna Karenina? dgaf.
Gender and power as explored in Left Hand of Darkness, or Slow River by Nicola Griffith? OOOOOOH!!!! π€―
Despite being a biology major, Race and gender in scifi was probably my favorite class of all of college, cause despite having a good amount of experience in English and literature before this, this was the one class where it all finally clicked and i learned how to truly analyze writing
Five classes i took in college:
- life and afterlife in the views of ancient humanity
- race and gender in science fiction
- Aboriginal studies (on study abroad)
- Australian vertebrate fauna (ditto)
- Ochem π«
UPDATE: I do not like 9" circulars for the heel :| Tension is coming out WAY too tight, and I feel like its like MiniMagicLoop, and I specifically got these needles to AVOID magic loop.
Ordered some DPNs, just for the hell xD
Thanks! its done in kawandi-style hand quilting! This page has a nice introduction to the art and history of this style if you're curious: www.anytexture.com/2022/09/lear...
Yeah im loving the 9" circulars for just going at the tube whole-hog, but everyone says they can be real weird for the heel so we'll see! π

theyβre not even correct because there are DOZENS of oak acorn types in North America and many of them are conspecific with Eurasian species
Embroidery/cross stitch is probably easier to adapt to left-handedness at first. For crochet, i recommend finding a simple beginner kit then looking up videos on how to flip specific stitches in the instructions to left-handed
ADORE the elegant simplicity of the skeleton!
not trying to LMGTFY but there are TOOOONS of amazing free videos on YouTube. you can find complete walk-thrus of projects, you can find specific videos focusing on specific stitches/skills, anything, from complete beginner up!
omg i love how charming these little stitch marker charms look π definitely helping me keep track of my stitches with everything black on black. This is the third time iβve restarted this cowl and its way easier now π #knitsky

When youβre getting into more complex knitting patterns but canβt find stitch markers that you like, but then you remember you ALSO do jewelry bullshit, so you order some charms for cheap on AliExpress and make them yourself π

@jemaineclement.bsky.social Hi Jemaine! Plz I have to know, are you the narrator of this random documentary about Krakatoa from 2005? youtu.be/MrEIT66oPqU?...

Ive fallen into the habit of scanning my friends homes and apartments for hidden painted-over vintage plant hooks and being like, thats a nice attachment point you got there, itd be a shame if someone DIDNT bring you a macrame to hang from itβ¦.
Its also a great way to get rid of my spider plants
I dunno, this image looks fine to me π€·ββοΈ
All of the STEAM curriculum i create is open source and i share it freely and widely! Im on my phone so I cant access my work google drive easily right now but if youre interested in the instructions and guide for this project let me know!
I also have had kids really get interested in using their new skills to modify and mend their clothing and get passionate about combating fast fashion. And this is all on top of them learning about microbial ecology, metabolism, and diversity, which we donβt have a lot of time for in class otherwise
But more importantly, the hands-on and creative experience really ends up resonating with many kids in unexpected ways. One of the first years I did it, one kid asked his abuela for help and they ended up really connecting over it and her experience with Mexican embroidery.

Every semester my AP Bio students do a microbiology #STEAM project i created called Petri Dish Embroidery. Students research bacterial species and do an embroidery about it. Its always a huge hit, kids always comment about how surprisingly chill and relaxing it is
